From a press release:

“Founded by Stu Davenport, and for the past seven years, Big Bear Café has been the Bloomingdale neighborhood spot for one of the area’s best cups of coffee or tea; breakfast or a homemade lunch, all served in a comfortable, welcoming environment or on the restaurant’s cobblestone patio surrounded by herb and flower gardens. Truly a ‘neighborhood’ spot, it has been involved in the founding of the area’s farmers’ market, community activities and social causes.

About two years ago, it began serving Chili in the evening, and has since grown its dinner menu utilizing the talents of some seriously pedigreed chefs. Fast forward to 2015, Big Bear Café is offering dinner Monday through Saturday, with plates that are stellar from product to presentation, a great selection of beer, wine and spirits, and a new James Beard nominated chef in the kitchen, front of the house manager and table service. The patio has also expanded to accommodate more diners (seats approximately 65-70). (more…)

From an email:

“As you covered on the site, the Pub & The People was broken into earlier this week, likely by a radical faction of the teetotaller party, and had most of their tools stolen, which could considerably delay their opening. The folks behind the Pub have been furiously welding, carpentering, tiling, and building this bar with their bare hands in an effort to open it’s doors to the citizens of DC. Making matters worse, due to the bar’s status as an “active construction site,” it was unable to have the stolen property reimbursed by insurance. So we think the fastest, most effective way to get the boys back to work would be to raise funds to get rudimentary tools so P&P can open on time. We’ve set up a Booster account to help the Pub get back on track, and would appreciate any help in achieving our goal of raising $3,000.”

Ed. Note: They’re over half way towards their goal – nice!

Props to David F and jaddams who sculpted this, er uh, sculpture in Bloomingdale. It looks huge and must’ve taken quite an effort to build – so I’m gonna call it a bird and say well done! Although, maybe it’s a garden gnome?

“First Degree Burglary
2100 – 2199 BLOCK OF 1ST STREET NW
03/03/2015 10:14

The Complainant reports as she walking home, she observed an unknown male following her. As she entered her basement apartment she locked her doors behind her. Shortly thereafter she heard a crashing noise and went to investigate and found the unknown male standing in her apartment. Without provocation the unknown male grabbed at her and asked her for money. As the Complainant screamed to occupants upstairs, she was struck about the face with a wooden object and kicked about the body. Hearing the commotion, the occupants in the above apartment decended into the basement apartment, causing the unknown male to exit the apartment without obtaining anything. An area canvass by MPD was conducted without success. Look-out for a Black Male, dark complexioned, 5’8 in height, wearing a green coat, blue jeans, red hats and carrying a wooden stick.

Anyone with information in connection to this offense can anonymously call 202) 727-9099.”

“Dear PoPville,

I have been trying unsuccessfully to get a piece of machinery removed from my street for a few weeks. This is on 100 block of V Street, NW in Bloomingdale, a street that already has half of its parking gobbled up by the water project. The machine is from a contractor that is renovating a house, it’s not part of the water project. I’m not quite sure how this machine is helpful in a home renovation to begin with, but I have seen the contractors move it in the morning so they can park their cars directly in front of the building they’re working on. I don’t think they’ve even been working on the house for the last week or two. There are and never have been “no parking” permits posted.”

Update: DPW tells OP that DCRA handles construction equipment that park without permits because this backhoe has no tag nor a vin number.”

If you are able to give anything I would be most grateful. The event is March 15, 2015 and I’m trying to raise an ambitious $1000 but I think PoPville is up to the task! Every little bit helps. Please make your donation here.

“We are shaving our heads to raise money for childhood cancer research! Did you know that kids’ cancers are different from adult cancers? It’s true. And childhood cancer research is extremely underfunded. So we decided to do something about it by raising money for cures.

Now we need your help! Will you make a donation? Every dollar makes a difference for the thousands of infants, children, teens, and young adults fighting childhood cancers.”

Please make your donation here.
