“On Wednesday, May 20, The Potter’s House will reopen its doors after going dark for more than two months during the coronavirus pandemic.

This nonprofit neighborhood institution, much-beloved in its Adams Morgan community, celebrated its 60th anniversary in April. It’s one of the longest-running enterprises in the city and one that has survived many hardships in the past.

But it’s much more than a cafe and bookstore — The Potter’s House is a hub of connection, a safe and welcoming gathering place for a deeply diverse community. Its reopening offers a ray of much-needed sunshine to the city. It’s a reassurance that The Potter’s House will continue to be here to offer hospitality, welcome, and comfort — even in the midst of a global pandemic. (more…)

Update from The Line DC’s manager:

“I would like to assure everyone that we are working on plans to reopen The LINE DC. We have been working diligently to develop the new protocols to look after the well being of our Employees & Guests when we open. Our sister hotel The LINE Austin will reopen May 21st as Texas has lifted the state’s stay at home order, and there are plans for The LINE DC to follow. We are respecting the DC Mayor ‘s orders and directions.
Also, I would like to assure our Neighbors that the Hotel Operation has always been compliant, and has exceeded the 51/51 hiring commitment, as certified by DOES. We have over 100 employees that live in Ward 1 (including myself) that we very much want to see back at work.
Thank you for your concern and for your support, it is most appreciated by all of us that are part of The LINE DC.

Ed. Note: The Line opened up after much anticipation and not without controversy in 2017. The Line DC is also home to restaurants, A Rake’s Progress, Brothers And Sisters and Spoken English.

If true this would be devastating on many levels. We will be keeping a very close eye on this, for once I’m very much hoping a previously accurate tipster is wrong.

A tipster writes: “word on the street is The Line is completely closing for good.”

The Line DC’s website still says: “In light of the current COVID-19 pandemic, all LINE Hotels are closed to the public including hotel rooms and all restaurants and bars.

Tryst Reopens in Adams Morgan for “carryout with limited menu options and household pantry items”

“The Tryst Trading Company has announced it will now offer carryout with limited menu options and household pantry items at its flagship restaurant, Tryst.

The CEO and Owner Constantine Stavropolous explains the priorities in safety and putting a limited staff back to work. “The health and safety of our staff is our first priority. Like many DC restaurants, we temporarily closed our restaurants in March. While it was a heartbreaking decision, we remained optimistic about reopening our doors in a safe and responsible manner. Our team members have been incredibly patient as we worked to reopen our doors.”

Guests can access the limited menu items and household pantry staples from Tryst’s website. Household pantry item orders will need to be placed in advance, and items can be picked up at Tryst from 8 AM- 3 PM daily. (more…)

“bullet holes everywhere” at Cuban Embassy

Yesterday we reported shots fired at the Cuban Embassy by a man with an assault rifle.

From MPD: “The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and the U.S. Secret Service (USSS) announce an arrest has been made regarding multiple shots fired in the 2600 block of 16th Street, Northwest on Thursday, April 30, 2020.

At approximately 2:10 am, members of MPD’s Third District responded to the listed location in reference to the sounds of gunshots. Upon arrival, MPD members located a subject with an assault-style rifle. The subject was immediately taken into custody without incident and the weapon was recovered. No injuries were reported at the scene. The investigation indicates that the subject was shooting toward a foreign embassy building located in the block.

On April 30, 2020, 42 year-old Alexander Alazo, of Aubrey, TX, was charged in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia with a Violent Attack on a Foreign Official or Official Premises Using a Deadly Weapon, Interstate Transportation of a Firearm and Ammunition With Intent to Commit a Felony, and Willfully Injuring or Damaging Property Belonging to or Occupied by a Foreign Government in the United States. This case remains under investigation with the USSS with assistance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Diplomatic Security Service. Anyone with information should call the USSS at 202-406-8800.”

THEHAUGE6 reports: “@PoPville There was a shooting outside the Cuban Embassy in the 2600 block of 16th St NW around 2:15 AM. Police arrived extremely fast and arrested one man with a rifle.”

One reader reported to us via email: “10+ shots fired at 2:10am. I couldn’t sleep and just heard a LOT of gunshots and now can hear police cars and ambulances. I live on 16th and Euclid.”

Another: “a man shouting something about being a US citizen. That was the loudest thing I’ve ever heard.”

Another: “Heard what sounded like at least 20 gunshots and now there’s a huge police presence on 16th in front of the Cuban embassy with yellow tape on both sides of 16th st”
