Charles was prolific this week!
The newly reformulated, traffic-calming, briefly Third World (repaving has begun) corner of 18th and Columbia/Adams Mill is soon to be graced with one of three large pieces of new sculpture and, possibly, and enhanced kiosk. Sadly, the survey is closed and our opinions mean nothing any more, but you can find more info about designs at:

All modern art has the potential to be silly, but even sillier is the claptrap artists put in their proposals:
“The sculpture’s composition, like the neighborhood, is diverse, creating a local and international feeling while embracing past and present neighborhood cultures.”
“…captures the heart and soul of the people of Adams Morgan by embracing the full diversity and rich history of Adams Morgan residents and architecture.”

“The “Adamor Circle” proposal emanates from one circle, a circle whose center is everywhere and whose circumference is nowhere. It is separated into many circles or hoops…. This work reflects the diverse and rich community history of Adams Morgan and can be used as a tool and a reminder to the community of the power that people posses to work together in concert as do the divergent elements of the sculpture…”
Guess they used the word “diversity” in the RFP. Call me a lightweight but I think they should just pick out a great piece of sculpture and worry about what it “captures” later on. I saw a sign in a gallery once that said “good art does not match your couch.” It might not “match” your neighborhood, either, but as long as it’s good…
So, which one are you rooting for? I hate to admit it, but I like the boring modern one most, perhaps because I, too have a center which is everywhere and a circumference which is nowhere. But the sunflowers are cool, too. I think the goofy bike will get old quick.
Ed. Note: GGW also took a look at these proposals. As for the sculptures, I hate to admit it but I kinda like the bike one!

Pollo Granjero is located at 1742 Columbia Rd, NW. I’ve often wondered about this place which seems to be a bit more on the fast food side but often crowded. How’s the Pollo?

From Joel of Qualia Coffee:
“I am trying to find out whether anyone in the neighborhood knows anything about a stray dog I found wandering up 5th St. this morning. I’m attaching a photo. I can be reached at the shop any time today. 202-248-6423”
From DC Alert:
“MPD is reporting a Water Main Break at 17th & Florida Ave NW. It is unknown if any customers affected.” I hear 18th Street has been closed. Did this destroy your commute?
From a reader:
“Oprah is giving out free kfc coupons for a free lunch. Coupon is only good to print till 11 or so today but its good to redeem until the 19th. I like that its not valid on mothers day, like hey cheap-o’s you can’t do your mother like that. Take her out to a real place and get her a steak…”

“Dear PoP,
Sometime last week road crews tore up 18th & Columbia, screwing up traffic and making things a giant pain in the ass for everyone in the area. Friday afternoon they packed up and split, leaving the intersection a nasty, gravelly mess.
I don’t know which talented public works official oversaw this brilliant plan, but it’s pretty ridiculous that they’d leave the place looking like a third-world slum all weekend without even pretending to work on it. Maybe they should have hired the guys remodeling the building next to mine, they definitely don’t have a problem working on Saturday mornings.”
Does anyone know the time frame for this project?

This condo is located at 1806 Belmont Road, NW:
The flier says:
“Charming spacious 2 br 1 ba in rare 5 unit brownstone. Picture window bay overlooking 18th & Belmont. Hardwood floors, updated marble bath, Kit with granite and stainless steel. Fireplace, recessed lighting, washer dryer, and 400 sq ft deck.”
More info and photos found here.
This one sounds and looks pretty sweet. Does $445,000 sound reasonable?

“Dear PoP,
Have you heard what’s going on with the building next to Safeway on Columbia Road, near 18th? The Popeyes, beauty supply store, and other stores have all closed down. I’m guessing it was sold? I doubt the Popeyes went out of business, they always seem to be so busy.”
Yup, it’s going to be a CVS. Kristen Barden from Adams Morgan BID wrote me that:
“Combined Properties (www.combined.biz) is combining all of their stores along that stretch – Popeye’s, the beauty supply store, Citibank, etc… and the CVS on the south side of Columbia Road will move over there. I also don’t know what will go in the old CVS space yet…”
Now, I’m curious what will go into the old CVS spot.

The Argonne Cafe is located at 1629 Columbia Rd NW. It looks like it has a nice little outdoor dining area. Whenever I walk by it doesn’t seem to be particularly crowded so I’m thinking this could be a good breakfast spot when other spots are all smashed. So what’s the scoop? Good breakfast? Lunch?

I’ve Found rediscovered the greatest Condo/Apartment name evah!

I love the fact that I get tips like this:
“On Havard street, just North of Lanier Place, on the north side of Harvard street, there is an elevated sidewalk. I do not quite understand it, as the sidewalk must be somewhat inconvenient if you live there, but it looks cool, has nice vantage points and is somewhat landscaped. I wonder what the thinking/history was behind it.”
I think this is what the reader was talking about. It really is quite cool. The backside hits the alley behind Irving Hobart in Mt. Pleasant.
