Thanks to a reader for sending this DC Mud article with an update on the Social Safeway (1855 Wisconsin Ave, NW) as well as a small update on what they call the “Not So Safeway” in Adams Morgan (which the reader calls the Salvadorian Safeway):

In the meantime, renovation procedures take a much more low-key tact at the “Not So Safeway” at 1747 Columbia Road, NW. That store will remain open when it goes under the knife (as early as early next month) and, although the store will forgo demolition, the end result will be much the same as in Georgetown.

“Under the current situation, [we couldn’t close the store]. We would have liked to, but if we’re not able to that, we’ll do the in-place remodel. It will be a complete interior renovation and decorum upgrade,” said Muckle. “It will look like…our other upgraded Safeways, of which there are now nine or ten in the area.”

We once discussed Safeway nicknames here. While we’re on the topic, anyone know of the renovation plans for the Georgia Ave. Safeway?

Hmm, I never noticed this “Soup Man” sign on 18th Street in Adams Morgan. I’m actually a huge soup fan, seriously. Ed. Note: I swear I used to be cooler than this… So how’s the soup here? I’m really imagining a soup nazi type spot. Any fans?

Asylum is of course a neighborhood landmark located at 2471 18th Street, NW in Adams Morgan. I had only known of the spot as a bar. But I’ve been hearing that it has an incredible brunch. On their Web site they announce that they are “DCist’s Favorite Breakfasts”. You can see their menu here. So what’s the word – is the breakfast really that good?

I hope it is because Asylum’s owner John Andrade will be opening a new spot, Meridian Pint in the old Bi-Rite building at 11th and Park, NW.

A few weeks ago I was walking to work through Pierce Park and saw the three guys in the picture, seemingly between permanent housing and a little tipsy, engaged in a semi-serious lesson in the use of numchucks. Not a typical sight on the walk to work and it really made the rest of my day. The guy who had put himself in charge of giving the lessons was clearly not an expert. He was concentrating hard just to get the numchucks to fly around his shoulders a few times without hitting his face. I really wanted to get my phone out and take a picture, but was afraid of the potential consequences given their activity. I think I could have outrun them if necessary, but having to tell the story of how I had gotten numchucked by three homeless dudes wasn’t something I wanted to risk.

I almost thought it was all a dream when, tonight, I was walking home from work and these guys were crossing the Duke Ellington bridge on their way toward the park. The picture really doesn’t do it justice, but these guys had gotten a hold of two busted Rascal type mobility chairs. One of the chairs was broken down so it was being towed by the other. I may have witnessed the first Rascal to Rascal tow. The chair in back was tied to the one in front with what looked like a long shoe string. It was actually working pretty well for them.

As I got closer I could see that they were having a great time towing the Rascals back to who knows where. Seeing as they were in a good mood, were at least implying a preference against serious efforts of mobility, and didn’t the numchucks out, I felt safe enough to snap a shot this time. Clearly, I still wasn’t comfortable enough to draw attention to myself by standing still to take the picture, but I think the scene comes across.

Not sure if they know that teaching numchuck lessons without qualification or a care in the world and Rascal riding are on my bucket list. I can’t wait to see what they come up with next.

I think the location is pretty sweet but I’m wondering what you guys think of the condo itself? Does $449,900 sound reasonable?

This isn’t a traditional “Helen of Troy” post but I’m truly confused by it. This is located on 18th Street in Adams Morgan. Is it possible that there was a business back in the day called Sterling? Was it related to jewelry or silver? I’ve never seen a name like this engraved in concrete above a window before. Any ideas?

It’s been a while since I posted just a regular condo. The inside looks pretty nice, with a fireplace and some exposed brick. What do you think of the condo itself? The asking price is $339,000, sound reasonable for this location?

A reader sent me an email that there was a bubble gum tree on 18th Street outside of Julia’s Empandas and suggested it might be a good Helen of Troy feature. I was so intrigued I headed over to 18th Street from 1st and R. And I’m glad I did. This is truly insane. Part of me thinks it is awesome and part of me thinks it’s rather foul. I suppose it’s an attempt at art? I think I’d be cooler with it if it was on a lamppost as I have a strong affinity for trees. What do you guys think?
