The big day is tomorrow. All the details on Apple’s grand opening is here. I was lucky enough to take a tour yesterday and it is, indeed, absolutely dope. The renovation of the building is simply gorgeous. And to be honest, there is no way my photographs captured the beauty so just go and check it out yourself. Seriously.

But I would like to put in a reminder that The DC History Center is also there and really great.

DC Bicycle Advisory Council Statement on the killing of Dave Salovesh:

“The District of Columbia Bicycle Advisory Council issued the following statement on the killing of Dave Salovesh.

The BAC mourns the tragic loss of Dave Salovesh, a community leader struck and killed April 19 while bicycling on Florida Avenue NE.

Individual BAC and Pedestrian Advisory Council members issued the following joint statement:

“The cycling and pedestrian community has lost a passionate advocate to a needless death. The majority of the D.C. Bicycle Advisory Council, with support of members of the D.C. Pedestrian Advisory Council, calls on the Council of the District of Columbia, Mayor Muriel Bowser, the Metropolitan Police Department, and the District Department of Transportation to enact further protections for cyclists and pedestrians, and to provide more funding for safety, enforcement, and facilities for cyclists and pedestrians throughout the District.” (more…)

Beverly Jones, artist, entrepreneur, “mother” of many pop-ups in and around Logan Circle for local artists, and the last manager of Pulp on the Hill and Pulp on 14th Street, NW, having taken over from Pulp founder, the late Ron “Feel the Love” Henderson, died in the early morning of March 23 of Myeloma. She was a welcoming face at Pulp and now, as we still mourn the loss of Pulp, we mourn Beverly. Her family and friends will celebrate her life on May 4 with details to be announced at the GoFundMe Page established by her daughter. We hope that many who frequented either or both stores, the pop-ups or who got to know Bev at Eastern Market where she sold her own cards and those of others for years, – – will want to donate here to help with the celebration of her too-short life.” (more…)

The story of Wendy Martinez, the runner stabbed in Logan circle last fall, was so hard for so many of us in DC.

Her fiancée Daniel is running the Boston marathon in a few weeks and is still $4,000 away from his fundraising goal. I don’t know him personally but saw a news story about the race and wanted to help out. Sometimes the runner has to make up the difference for these fundraising bibs. (more…)

“Yesterday would have been my mom’s 85th birthday and, as I was looking at old photos of her, I found this photo of her taken by my dad in the early 1960s when they visited D.C. (they were living in Atlanta at the time).

What struck me most (besides how beautiful my mom is) is the fact that you don’t see any people in the background. I can’t imagine visiting the Mall these days — in any kind of weather, let alone on a warm sunny day — and not seeing anyone there!”
