UPDATE: a Virtual Tip Jar for Salon/Spa/Tattooers, etc.

“Dear PoPville,

I’m reaching out today as my compatriots and I at the barbershop have been discussing our futures through this uncertain time.

Our shop has been closed now since March 7th to do our part as citizens to curtail this virus. While we still retain our jobs at this time, many of us in the (Beauty) Industry have not been so lucky. Just like the much of the service/restaurant industry, we do not get paid unless we are working, having hands in hair, and as one might imagine this comes with risks to ourselves, our families, our clients, the city et al. Unemployment would amount to a fraction of a fraction as far as we are considered.

We feel we have not seen our industry represented besides the other areas of Service in the media. We have seen wonderful apps materialize such as Virtual Tip Jar, But there is no spreadsheet cell for Salon/Barbershop/Stylist. There has been much outreach to the restaurant community and they still have walk-ins stocked and product to move. Though their solution may be short lived, they have skills on which they can pivot. We are rooting for their success! Outside of doing house calls, which may be our one saving grace (though still comes at great risk) we have no export beyond our touch. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

The family of the homicide victim last week (shooting on Quebec Street NW of Malik Brown) has a GoFundMe for expenses.

Malik’s mom is a teacher at my son’s daycare and she was so proud of him. You can see in the GoFundMe description that he recently graduated from Marshall University with a degree in computer science. He wasn’t doing anything wrong, he was just walking to work.”

I got off to a bit of a late start this year – this awesome event is March 15th at Boundary Stone (116 Rhode Island Ave NW in Bloomingdale) – and like previous years – anyone who donates $20 or more gets a free PoPville t-shirt at the event. I’m out of larges but have plenty of small, medium and XL. Of course any amount helps so thanks for considering! Last year team Boundary Stone crushed it! Please help us again this year – thanks!!

“Dear PoPville,

I’m hosting a Happy Hour at Sorellina on Valentine’s Day on behalf of Voices on the Border, a small but mighty NGO that works on human rights and development in El Salvador. I’m a teacher and on their board of directors. We’re raising $1000 for a teacher’s salary in a small community in El Salvador. See flyer (above) for more information about the teacher, Maria Orellana. People can donate online to Maria’s cause here. Sorellina will donate a portion of a specialty cocktail to Maria, and we’ll have a computer set up to do donations on site. Come to Sorellina (Friday 5-8pm) and start your Valentine’s Day off by supporting Maria. Have a Heart for a Teacher on Valentine’s Day!” (more…)

“Lidia’s world has recently been turned upside down. Last month, after wrapping an early dinner on a rare Sunday night off, Lidia was headed home to relax and rest for her next shift. She woke up in a hospital bed with no recollection of how she got there or why she was there. What Lidia did know was that she could no longer move her arms or her legs. (more…)

“Early Sunday morning (Jan 5, 2020), a fire gutted a duplex row house in the 400 block of Madison St. NE, displacing a family of 8 who have lost everything.

The family is stable and recovering. Matriarch of the family, Mrs. Caviness-Bey sustained 2nd degree burns to her face and arm and broke her wrist and pelvis when she jumped from the second floor bedroom nearly escaping the fire after dropping her 2 year old grandson out the window to safety. The other two granddaughters ages 14 and 7 are also doing well and were able to get out the front door escaping the fire. The family dog was found safe, and is now being cared for by a neighbor.

ANC 4B09 Commissioner LaRoya Huff has organized a Donation Drive, to take place on Wednesday, January 8th from 3:00 pm – 8:00 pm at Riggs-LaSalle Recreation Center. They are working with the family to determine next-steps as regards setting up a GoFundMe account as well.
