Celebrating 90 years since the first Festival

The National Cherry Blossom Festival, Atsuyuki Oike, Deputy Chief of Mission of The Embassy of Japan, sponsors, and stakeholders joined at the Smithsonian American Art Museum for a preview of the 2017 National Cherry Blossom Festival (March 20-April 16). Speakers at the launch, presented by Guest Services, Inc., announced new and expanded events and kicked off the 90th anniversary of the first Festival.

The 2017 official artwork was unveiled (pictured above). The artwork was created by Naturel, a DC-based artist whose talents have also attracted the eyes and ears of celebrity clients such as Swizz Beatz, Rihanna, Spike Lee, Paul Rosenberg and LeBron James, among many others. (more…)

Don’t miss the Mexican Cultural Institute’s annual Day of the Dead celebration! This well-known community event is a quintessentially Mexican tradition and one of our most colorful displays of the year.

This year’s celebration will feature an installation piece by Mexican designer and creative director Luis Fitch. Fitch, the director of UNO Branding, will construct an altar-like installation evoking the aesthetics of papel picado, the festive punched paper often used as a symbol in Day of the Dead altars. It will be on view through November 14.

Additionally, the MCI will have a traditional altar dedicated to famed Mexican musician Juan Gabriel, who died earlier this year. (more…)

Located at the Glover Park-Burleith Farmers Market which is in the parking lot of Hardy Middle School (1819 35th Street, NW). It is this Saturday from 9am to 1pm, there will be a free petting zoo, 5 local fiber farms, tons of hand knit yarn and wares, plus bountiful local food. Its a great way to celebrate all things local within the community! Yoga District of Glover Park is even hosting free yoga in the garden of the school from 10am to 11am.

“On Tuesday, October 25, 2016, the Annual High Heel Race will take place in the District of Columbia. In conjunction with this event, there will be several street closures that motorists should take into consideration.

The following streets will be closed from 6:30 pm to 11:00 pm:

· 17th Street, NW between Riggs Place, NW to P Street, NW – Southbound

· Riggs Place, R Street, Corcoran Street, Q Street, and Church Street, NW (Eastbound and Westbound), between 16th Street NW and 18th Street NW

RACE/WALK ROUTE

The race will start at 9:00 pm. The race will begin at 17th and R Street NW and travel southbound on 17th Street and disband prior to 17th and P Street NW.”

Autumn has arrived, and Fall Fest returns – this Saturday! Rhode Island Avenue NE Main Street’s (RIAMS) signature annual event brings together local businesses, vendors, performers, and neighbors in a celebratory day, taking place from 10am-4pm. The event is free and open to the public, and is both family and pet-friendly. Fall Fest is conveniently located along Rhode Island Avenue NE between 20th-24th Streets NE.

40+ local vendors, including Zeke’s Coffee, The Capital Candy Jar, District Dance Arts, Hands on Drums, and Quilts in Color, will be set up along the Avenue. Performances by Capoeira Males DC, Handsome Hound, and more will take place on the Access Green Entertainment Stage, with opening remarks by Mayor Bowser at 10am.”
