“Dear PoPville,

How is it that Dacha and other restaurants are getting away with charging miscellaneous fees to customers? Why are customers forced to subsidize minimum wage of their employees and then tip on top of that?? If owners can’t afford to pay their workers minimum wage then maybe stop opening multiple locations—better yet find a new occupation. 35% in tip and fees is a bit ridiculous for a beer and pretzel.”

“Dear PoPville,

First – I would like to be clear, I do not wish to limit free speech of any kind, just lower the volume a smidge, especially when said speakers/preachers are 5-10 feet from residences, businesses, bus stops and metro entrances as well as 20 feet from a senior apartment building.

This particular issue has been ongoing since the start of the pandemic in 2020. It involves 2-3 preachers yelling into an amplified speaker right next to the Truist Bank and steps from the WMATA 52-54 bus stop on the corner of 14th and Irving Streets NW for hours on end. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I’m currently apartment hunting in NW DC and I’m seeing something new to me. One rather large apartment building (425 Mass) claimed that the utilities which they bill for monthly, which includes water/sewer/boiler costs, total around $180 per month. I have never heard of a boiler fee personally, and in my experience water and sewer on the high end would cost maybe as high as $60 at the rate I’ve traditionally used water. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I am trying to file a new unemployment claim and the website is a tangle of nonsense. When you go to the does.dcnetworks.org website it says you cannot file for a new claim over the internet (see photo below) and when you call the phone number is says they no longer accept claims over the phone (see phone guidance on the unemployment.dc.gov website below). Has anyone recently found a way around these loopholes, I really don’t want to have to go to the office in Deadwood. Any help would be appreciated.”
