“Dear PoPville,
First – I would like to be clear, I do not wish to limit free speech of any kind, just lower the volume a smidge, especially when said speakers/preachers are 5-10 feet from residences, businesses, bus stops and metro entrances as well as 20 feet from a senior apartment building.
This particular issue has been ongoing since the start of the pandemic in 2020. It involves 2-3 preachers yelling into an amplified speaker right next to the Truist Bank and steps from the WMATA 52-54 bus stop on the corner of 14th and Irving Streets NW for hours on end.
My neighbors and I have reached out to DCRA as well as Councilwoman Nadeau to no avail. DCRA is short-staffed and can’t always come out at the same time to measure the decibels and Councilwoman Nadeau has said, “you chose to live in the city, that’s city living.” Yes, I do agree I chose to live in the city and have done so for close to 30 years. HOWEVER, the decibels are way above what is allowed by law – especially so close to commercial, transit, and residential property. I feel horrible for those waiting for the bus, their ears must be ringing. And the bankers at Truist – they have said they find it difficult to conduct business and don’t want to lose customers strictly because of the noise and location. I would hate for another business to leave Columbia Heights.
I previously have asked very nicely to lower it a bit as many (still) have to work from home, but the response was for them to go even louder.
Annnnny suggestions on requesting help for lowering the decibels a bit given the very close proximity to residences, businesses, bus stops and metro entrances, (and don’t say move to the ‘burbs) would be welcome.”
