“Dear PoPville,

Any recommendations for a great ob/gyn in DC? I have a family history of breast cancer, so I’m looking for someone with experience in this area and who will help me monitor my breast health and refer me for annual ultrasounds (and later, mammograms). I’m not looking to have kids anytime soon.”

“Dear PoPville,

I currently live in a so-called luxury apartment and have recently sighted a mouse in my unit. I’ve alerted management, but they have not been very responsive at all which has been very frustrating. The kicker here is that my lease is up in two months so my questions are — anyone else have this issue in a somewhat new-ish building? Am I overreacting or is this normal for DC? Is it worth battling it out with management or should I just bail? I like the area, but have had a few minor complaints about the building itself so I’m not entirely in love with the place. Thanks.”

“Dear PoPville,

My two good friends are moving back into DC (so know the area well) but are searching for apartment buildings that allow big dogs. The dog is a fantastic 95-pound mountain dog who gets along with other pups (though prefers humans with food) and tends to sleep all day. My friends are aware that they would probably have to put down an additional pet deposit/pay a monthly fee.

Ideally, they’d like to be in Logan, Shaw, Bloomingdale, Convention Center area, etc.

Possible?”

“Dear PoPville,

I’ve been seeing a few wedding-related questions recently, which have been super helpful since I’m in the middle of planning a spring 2019 wedding! I’m currently researching wedding photographers and noticed the last post asking for recommendations from the PoPville hive is from 2014 – since then a lot of the recommended photographers have left the area or raised their prices above my budget. As with the last update, I’m near the lower end of the budget range for my wedding, so I’m absolutely open to recommendations for folks who may be looking to break into the business.”

“Dear PoPville,

Our next door neighbor’s entire backyard is a giant farm/garden. From what we gather, this is something they’ve been doing for a long, long time. In theory, we find this really impressive. I love urban farming!

However, in practice, it is less awesome. They keep a giant, open storage container/tub of water in the backyard. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I’d like to hear from DC renters about property management companies they love renting from and property management companies that make their lives a living hell. I think we can all agree that property management companies wield a lot of power over how accessible and fair DC housing is, city-wide. But when we talk about “our landlords” we tend to speak about it individually (“My landlord is ignoring me, my landlord is screwing me over”). Thing this is, those individual actions add up and shape quality and accessibility of fair housing in the city as a whole, especially when large property management companies hold huge market share over certain neighborhoods.

I’ll start:

I lived in a house in Shaw manged by Duke Lash of DSK Property Management for 4 years. Duke is awesome. He was fair, helpful, and accessible. Once our piped bursts and he and his wife spent an entire Friday evening at our house helping us sort through the problem. He worked for the owners, but he was a fair arbiter between parties. If something wasn’t going to be addressed by the owners, he explained why and gave us other options. Duke, you’re great.

On the flip, (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

My niece is in town for 4th of July and I want to take her down to the evening concert and fireworks on the national mall. I would love to get some tips from any brave souls who have done it before! Like how early should we plan to arrive? What is the best fireworks viewing location? Easiest entrance? and any other survival tips would be most appreciated.

Also, where does one buy fireworks in the district? My niece is really excited to get some, but I have not seen any stands.

Thanks a Million!”

Ed. Note: From MPD:

Whether you’re celebrating Independence Day or the New Year, a backyard barbecue or other family occasion, it is important to understand the laws regulating fireworks use in the District of Columbia. Find out what fireworks are permitted and prohibited in DC. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

This is our first D.C. summer with a backyard/patio on Capitol Hill. We love our small yard, but as the weather warmed up, so did the pests. Lately, we’ve been dealing with an insane number of cockroaches (both German and American) that come out at night. We’ve put out roach motels, which fill up every night, but it obviously doesn’t address the problem. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

We are moving back into our 1914 rowhouse after a few years of tenants and want to take this opportunity to do some restoration of our beautiful cherry-inlaid parquet floors. We have some damaged boards right where the parquet pattern is that pre-date our ownership that we would like to replace, places that are worn with little or no poly left, and wear patterns to address. We have received conflicting advice on how to proceed, ranging from (more…)
