Thanks to all who messaged. From Nick’s father:

“My son Nick has has been forging his own path over the last 8 months or so, preferring to go solo, living in the Wash DC area. It’s been the toughest thing to let him work it out and come back into the family’s orbits.

However, I just learned yesterday that his world in DC, since arriving in May, has been anything other than pleasant. Nick’s friends say they have not heard from him since July 7. We are looking for him and are so very concerned. Working with authorities now.

If anyone has seen or heard from Nick, please let me know. If not, then please keep him and our family in your prayers. He is an amazing person; we love him very much and want him to be happy and safe.

Thanks,
Blaine and the Holt Family”

“Dear PoPville,

A week ago, I was a part of a bachelorette party as the only male member of the group, as the bride is my best friend. With the exception of a winery tour that had happened much earlier in the day, the party as an event was loosely structured and we had no firm plans for what the evening of Saturday would look like. We had narrowed down what we wanted to do to a geographic area – either Adams Morgan or Dupont. No one wanted a wild evening as we had a brunch reservation the following morning, so as far as pre-wedding events go, this was definitely a tempered and responsible occasion. Per my recommendation, I suggested to the bride that we go to Pitchers – not because I was gay and wanted to go there because it was a gay bar, but because (based on the one time I visited there a month earlier) they had Mario Kart on their walls and an assortment of games that would have simply sustained a fun evening. Rightfully, she said this sounded like a great idea and after an hour and a half of getting ready, we were headed to the bar at 10:30 PM.

I will preface this anecdote by mentioning my first and only other experience at Pitchers. I had a great time there, albeit subdued. The atmosphere was not rowdy and lent itself well to conversation, as well as my futile attempts at flirting (although the owner-manager of the bar applauded me when I flirted with one of his bartenders). It was a great night, and I knew I’d want to come back at some point to continue besting strangers at Mario Kart.

Unfortunately, that looks highly unlikely at this point after the appalling lack of sensitivity I experienced at this bar on the evening of July 22. (more…)

From a press release:

“ANC 1C Commissioners Disappointed By BZA Decision on Meridian Development Project

Look to Office of Planning and Zoning Commission to Address Ongoing Concerns

The BZA voted on Wednesday, July 25th, to approve two special exceptions for the Meridian development project (BZA App. 19689). ANC1C has opposed this project seven times as it has worked its way through the review process, beginning in 2015. The community’s opposition rests on the size and scope of the project, which would bring 110 luxury residential units, a 9,600 square foot conference center, and underground parking to the currently tree-covered lot in the Meridian Hill Historic District.

ANC1C’s long-standing opposition has been driven by overwhelming community objections and concern’s about the project’s impacts. ANC1C is also concerned that Meridian International, a non-profit leadership organization that is headquartered in the adjacent historic John Russell Pope mansions, is not a private school – a key requirement they must satisfy in order to obtain the relief needed for the conference center. “Dear PoPville,

My boyfriend and I were walking down 14th street NW (I believe we were between T and S streets) Friday morning when we walked past a man who asked us if we were registered DC voters. After mumbling “yes” but continuing to walk past him, he told us he was running for DC mayor. We continued walking, and he asked us if we “were really walking away from him.” My boyfriend politely said “yes”, which immediately made the man’s temperament switch to highly aggressive.

He quickly ran up to my boyfriend and got in his face and his body language was physically threatening, asking if he said that we were walking away from him. My boyfriend remained calm and didn’t engage with him, but the “mayoral candidate” aggressively shoved my boyfriend into the wall/nearest storefront. He looked like he might continue to attack my boyfriend but luckily he turned and walked away.

“Dear PoPville,

At about 4:35 P.M. Tuesday, I was standing on the northeast corner of 14th St and Rhode Island Ave NW, about to cross 14th street to go to Shake Shack. A woman with short hair was traveling on a bicycle southwest down Rhode Island (we had the light). A man on a bike riding north on 14th street cut across Rhode Island Ave despite the fact that he had a red light. That man cut both me and the short haired woman off while riding north. The woman said something like “what the fuck dude” to the man. He replied with “shut the fuck up you fucking dyke.” (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I have an all-in-one washer/dryer (Ariston ANW129NA). I’m wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a repair service, especially someone that’s familiar with all-in ones/Aristons. I also realize that cost will depend on what’s wrong with it, but what do folks think a reasonable price range for repairs might be? (I’ve never done this before, so I have no frame of reference.)”

“Dear PoPville,

I searched the archives but could not find a thread that discussed various on-line/ web-based rental payment/ collection tools. I am looking at a few and would love to hear what folks have used and liked— from either landlord or tenant perspective. There is Cozy.co, Zillow, PayLease, ClearNow, ClickPay, etc.”

“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to alert my neighbors on the 1900 block of Calvert Street and the surrounding area that cars parked on the south side of the street were wrongfully ticketed and towed Saturday July 21st. “No Parking” signs were posted by a private mobile crane operator yesterday to install an HVAC unit this morning. The signs clearly indicated that they were printed on Friday July 20th, not the 72 hours in advance required by District law. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I’m wondering if anyone else has had this issue, and if so what they did about it. I rushed out to move my car for street sweeping yesterday and got there right before the buzzer at 9:28, but a parking enforcement officer was already writing me a ticket. I commented that it was before the 9:30 cutoff and flashed my phone to show the time at 9:28, and was told condescendingly that once the ticketing process starts it’s impossible to stop giving the ticket.
