“Dear PoPville,

Do readers have any recommendations for jewelry repair stores? This question was last asked in 2011 but I’m sure a lot of those places have, sadly, closed since then.

I recently (as in two years ago, ha) inherited some jewelry from my grandmother and I’d to get it cleaned/inspected before wearing it. Other things I am considering doing are getting the pieces appraised, pearls restrung, stones re-set, etc so this is potentially a big job and I’d like to use someone reputable.

I’ve never owned even remotely valuable jewelry so I have no clue where to start. Any other things I should be aware of?”

“Dear PoPville,

As the furlough drags on, my wife and I have time to go to a restaurant during the day. However a lot of the ones we always wished we could go to don’t open until later (hello, Maydan). Does anyone have recommendations for great DC restaurants open during the day? (Brunch, lunch, big meals, small plates – anything)”

From the Capital Area Food Bank:

“In response to the partial government shutdown, the Capital Area Food Bank is holding five free Pop Up Markets for government employees and contractors affected by the furlough.

This Saturday, January 12, CAFB will be distributing free produce and shelf-stable items outside of 5 area Giant locations from 9 AM to 12 PM. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Was hoping somebody in the community could help out here. I am in the middle of moving out of my apartment building (older small building with no onsite building management) and noticed the items in my storage unit are gone. Each apartment gets a space and there is no fee for it and its basically a large wooden shelf with chicken wire so you can lock your stuff up. The kicker here is that I may have used the wrong specific space (because I wasn’t sure which was mine at the time I moved in) – but seeing as there was one available I assumed. At one point the building sent out an email asking if anyone may be using a space that was not theirs and I replied that it was likely me. I never heard back and assumed that meant everything was ok.

Fast forward – I go down for the first time in several months to complete my move out and notice my items are no longer there and have been replaced by someone elses stuff. (more…)

11th and Park Road, NW

“Dear Popville,

I’ve been following the dismayed reaction to the news that the 11th Street dog park is now for sale and I have some questions.

1. How did anyone not see this coming from miles away? WMATA properties must, by law, be disposed of at market rate. The dog park is zoned as MU-4, is over 7,000 square feet and sits directly in the middle of a high density, high value corridor. It was never going to be worth anything less than $2,000,000. And guess what, the opening bid for the property is now a minimum of $2.1 million. So remember that $1.5 million that the Council voted on to ‘save the park’? Yeah…that was never really a thing that was going to work. You should think about whether or not that’s why it passed.

2. Did anyone think about the propriety of spending public money for this use relative to what the overall needs of Ward 1 are? (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

My company is relocating to the VA suburbs from our downtown DC location soon. I live in the District and I’m fortunate enough to walk most places I need to go, so I don’t own a car. The commute via public transportation would be 1.5 hours each way (on a good day).

I’m curious if folks in the community have thoughts on whether to grin and bear the commute? The company is flexible on remote employment, so I’m also looking into coworking memberships, but the membership fee has me hesitating. Any recommendations on how to strike a balance would be great. Thanks!”

“Dear PoPville,

Any tips for making the Washington Times stop their unrequested deliveries to my house? Been happening for months. They ignore my calls, emails, Facebook messages. I don’t want this paper and don’t support their message– help make it stop! They just started delivering to me. They even hide the Times inside a Washington Post wrapper. This is my collection since Thursday. Once when I called them, they said it was a promo and they did stop for a few weeks, but they started up again and don’t answer the phone now. I’ve emailed, called and facebooked them. Pretty sure I DM’ed at one point too. They just won’t go away. Part of me says “let them waste their money!” but it just ends up being more junk for me to throw away, wastes paper, and artificially bloats their subscriber count.”
