“Dear PoPville,

I live in a building on 16th Street, NW. I’ve lived here for the past two years in a studio apartment on the first floor. During my time here, I’ve realized that the landlords are slumlords of a truly spectacular caliber. There are serious problems with many tenants in this building who treat the entire building and surrounding grounds as their personal property, with no concern whatsoever for the general comfort, well-being, or cleanliness of the shared spaces. This is a large building (8 stories) with numerous units, and the management is well aware of these people who do, among other things, the following: (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Not quite sure what to do with the situation we faced today. My spouse was getting in the car when a woman with a baby ran up to him and ask that he call 911 because she was involved in some domestic disturbance. Her partner was argumentative and aggressive towards her and her child in the street and with my husband, demanding that he better not call the police. He did and they arrived very quickly to intervene. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

My husband and I bought a home in Brookland in October 2018. We received a letter from our insurance provider a few weeks ago stating that they are unable to renew our policy at the end of the year because we “refused” the home inspection. Neither my husband or I have any knowledge or memory of refusing a home inspector, and frankly if they had shown appropriate credentials we would have allowed. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I am a long-time resident of Capitol Hill but a very recent, first-time homeowner. The house is a contributing property to the historic district, and the front door needs to be replaced (it is heavily rotted and is also not original). I have obtained a permit to replace the door, and I am looking for recommendations for a local carpenter to create an historic reconstruction mahogany door. (more…)

11th and Lamont Street, NW

“Dear Popville,

A few weeks ago, it was encouraging to see the western sidewalks of 11th St NW btw Lamont and the infamous $2M+ dog park covered w a construction walkway for pedestrians. In going past today, though, I noticed that walkway was taken down and no construction done to the former Chinese restaurant and laundromat. Upon closer inspection, there’s a stop work order for an unsafe worksite, but also a permit for a 14-unit mixed residential retail building after razing the existing structure(more…)

Ever since reading about pawpaws last year on PoPville, I have tried but failed to locate a source for buying them. Any chance you could ask your readers for suggestions? I think they are or are about to be in season.”
