“Dear PoPville,

On Sunday, October 6th our dog was attacked by an off-leash dog north of intersection of Kennedy and 5th Streets NW. The dog was a female pitbull with tan and white markings. The owner was a young male and had a thick red collar and rope leash in his hand. He suffered scrapings on his knees and hands from helping break up the fight. The pitbull had some bleeding on her ear.

We are working with Animal Control at the Humane Rescue Alliance to try to identify the owner, (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I’m a DCPS teacher and a reader of your blog. Was hoping you could help me find the best dollar store in DC. In need of a good one. Any teachers can tell you that not all dollar stores are created equal and I have struggled to find a good one in the city. The best one I’ve found is all the way out in Bowie, which is far.”

Here are the plans and a rendering for what’s coming from the Trammell Crow Company:

“Dear PoPville,

I’m trying to find info on the DCRA website but am not having any luck – probably because I don’t know the proper terms for my issue.

We’re in a row house with a detached garage behind it. My anecdotal understanding is that we can keep a full structure where the garage is since it was built before the zoning laws changed. Unfortunately, the garage is falling down and we need to demolish it for safety’s sake but we can’t afford to rebuild it at the moment. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

his morning, before 7am, I woke up to the sound of about 15 measured explosions (?), though I’m not sure what they were. It sounded like fireworks or maybe construction equipment that is used when laying a building’s foundation (there’s a lot of construction around here). The sound was so powerful that it caused my house to vibrate. It continued to happen every 10 minutes or so, with the last sequence sounding much more like fireworks, with an uneven distribution. Does anyone know what the heck it was? Not sure if it’s connected to Ft. McNair?”

Eric replied to a similar query on twitter:

“Fort Myer. Almost certainly practicing artilary/cannon fire. It did have a different pacing today but that’s what it was.”

“Dear PoPville,

There’s a guy who deserves a shout out that I’ve seen every morning for the last month or so. He works the insane intersection of Mass Ave, 11th and a handful of other little roads that all intersect within feet of each other. He’s a crossing guard who puts himself right in the middle of the action during rush hour. He guides everyone from very young kids to older folks who could use an arm, safely across the very confusing streets, and he does so incredibly efficiently.

The reasons it’s clear that he deserves some kudos are as follows. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I’m looking for tips on researching the history of our 20-unit building in Woodley Park. I’m pretty sure (but not 100% sure) that the building turns 100 years old next year, and it would be nice to do something to commemorate the occasion. It would also be cool to learn about the building’s history and if there have been any interesting occupants. Where should I start?”

Ed. Note: I’d say head to DCPL’s Washingtoniana location in Van Ness.
