“Dear PoPville,

Looking for advice on buying a condo in a two-unit condo building.

We are considering purchasing one unit in a two unit condo building. We’d love to hear about your experience and recommendations if you have lived in a two unit condo building. Certainly welcome other thoughts, too. Thanks!”

“Dear PoPville,

I am really not a cook but still want Thanksgiving dinner for me and my partner. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good basic American style thanksgiving dinner that I can pick up from somewhere to take home and enjoy for two? l I know some supermarkets do it but I was wondering if any readers have suggestions that they have enjoyed before. Thanks”

“Dear PoPville,

I am writing to see if there is an existing warning list or something similar for terrible landlords We just moved out of a row home where the landlord was excessively rude (calling us “little girls” or a “waste of time” when asking for the landlord to look at issues in the house), was a pain to get to fix defunct heaters in the winter, neglected to fix leaks, or update decades old appliances that damaged our clothes. It ultimately took him a full month to get our security deposit back past the 45 day deadline, because his first check bounced which he blamed on USPS (!?!?). (more…)

“Aged Ramen Noodles from Nishiyama”

From an email:

“Please find a personal letter from Mr. Takashi Nishiyama, President of Nishiyama Seimen Co., Ltd. in Sapporo, Japan that directly addresses the recent comments made by a commenter, Joshua Hamilton, disputing the authenticity of Hatoba’s Sapporo-style ramen.

Daikaya Group partner and native of Tokyo, Japan Daisuke Utagawa wanted to take this opportunity to directly address the comment made in the recent PoPville article highlighting the opening of Hatoba, and furthermore to help educate both Joshua and readers on the history behind Sapporo ramen and Nishiyama Seimen Co., Ltd. where Daikaya Group continues to receive custom ramen noodles from of which are featured at all of their celebrated restaurants throughout the District – Daikaya, Haikan, Bantam King, and Hatoba.

In response to the following comment from Joshua Hamilton:

Having lived in Sapporo for more than ten years and make a living doing PR work for Sapporo’s most famous Ramen company, I have to say that this shops menu does not reflect Sapporo ramen authentically in any way!
Come for the real thing instead of some half baked notion of what they think it is.

“Early Days at the Nishiyama Ramen Factory”

“Dear PoPville,

My name is Takashi Nishiyama, and I am the President of Nishiyama Seimen, a noodle company based in Sapporo, Japan.

I was glad to see your recent article about the new ramen shop HATOBA, with whom our company has had the pleasure to collaborate. I was surprised, however, to see a baseless comment in response to that article. I believe it was written by a reader who is unaware of the history and traditional culture of Sapporo ramen.

The ramen that HATOBA serves is authentic Sapporo ramen, created in partnership with our company. The staff of HATOBA flew to Sapporo several times, and along with my staff, created the ramen at our company’s development office.

Sapporo ramen is a culinary culture that was born in the 1950s as a result of conversations between ramen shops in Sapporo and their customers. Miso ramen, which is now popular throughout the world, was born in 1955 in Sapporo. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I’ve been looking on Craigslist for a new apartment and it seems like 90% of rentals available on Craigslist nowadays are scams. I’ve had people ask me to pay a security deposit and sign the lease before I even see the unit or saying they are renting out a unit or house that is currently for sale or even faking email addresses and posing as actual licensed real estate agents – but when I reach to the actual real estate agent, they say it’s a scam! “Dear PoPville,

I’ve been sharing it with my parent friends as a reminder of what we need to watch. I try to be easygoing and let my 9yo daughter have some independence, but I’m really rattled after Saturday.

My daughter and I were standing near the rally stage at 3rd and Pennsylvania around 2 p.m. It was crowded but everyone was happy and it was a beautiful day.

Then a white guy in his mid-50s standing near us started standing TOO near us. He said, “How old is your daughter? Is she 8?” I replied that she was 9, because I hadn’t fully caught up with how weird he was yet. He said, in a manner I can only describe as super fucking creepy and with a big wolfish smile, “She looks just like candy.” It was so weird and aberrant, it gave me chills. (more…)

Amy asks: “I have a friend coming to town this weekend who is in a quest to find a winning chai in the district, and I bet PoPville will have some opinions!”

Ed. Note: Some general tea recs here.

“Dear PoPville,

I bought a 1940 fixer upper and half the basement was paneled (including the ceiling). I took down the paneling, which is unpainted), and removed all the nails. I was originally going to reuse it, but now I’d like to sell it instead. It’s really good quality stuff. Aside from Craigslist, any ideas on how to get some cash for the wood? I’d like it to finance some other home repairs. Thanks!”

“Dear PoPville,

I live in a co-op building in Adams Morgan that is across the street from a large apartment building. Last night I noticed a light flickering across the street and saw that there was a man masturbating in front of his window, facing my building. He turned the light off after 10-15 seconds and then back on 10-15 seconds later. He did this a few times. It was apparent to me that he was trying to get attention by doing this and that this was the point. This was not just incidental behavior I happened to see–it was intentional, nonconsensual, and creepy. He was watching my building the entire time. I feel very uncomfortable knowing I could be watched by this guy in my own home and that any children in my building could witness this or be the target of his behavior. (more…)
