“Hatoba – the 3rd Sapporo-style ramen shop/4th restaurant from the talented team behind the Daikaya Group – Daikaya, Haikan, and Bantam King – including dynamic DC-based partners and restaurateurs Daisuke Utagawa, Executive Chef Katsuya Fukushima, and Yama Jewayni – opened in the District’s booming ‘The Yards’ neighborhood.

Featuring 2,200-square feet, and seating for 89 with 50 seats in the main dining room, 26 on the patio, and 13 at the ramen bar, Hatoba – meaning dock – is opening within the Boilermaker Building in The Yards offering an original selection of Sapporo-style ramen, completely different from the assortment of ramen currently offered at both Daikaya and Haikan. Signature ramen selections at Hatoba include Red Miso Clam, Spicy Red Miso, Yuzu Shio, Garlic Shoyu, and a vegan-friendly Tomato Curry.
Hatoba’s beverage program is heavily inspired by baseball stadiums that place a focus on offering fans a selection of shatterproof beverages and the ramen shop will mimic that by featuring an eclectic collection of can-centric selections of beer, sake, wine, and cocktails. Playful and unique, beverage artisans today are making a wide variety of drinks in creative packaged forms and as a result Hatoba will be showcasing the breadth of what is available, and also with the hopes of getting away from the mentality that sake, wine, or cocktails in cans isn’t high quality.
After joining several of the Daikaya partners on multiple research and development trips to Japan seeking inspiration – first for Daikaya – and again for Bantam King, Haikan, and most recently for Hatoba – Brian Miller, Senior Design Director at Edit Lab at Streetsense, signed on to assist with providing the design foundation for Hatoba in collaboration with Daikaya Group partner Yama Jewayni.
“Kappabashi is one of our favorite streets in Japan, with hundreds of specialist shops supplying restaurant equipment from the most common pair of chopsticks to the most specialist cooking implements”, said Senior Design Director, Edit Lab at Streetsense. “Located in a former boilermaker building built in 1919, Hatoba reflects Kappabashi’s visual feast. Thousands of soup bowls line the walls, private ramen booths carry their own shop themes, and the menu is set in shokuhin sampuru (Japanese artificial display foods) which are displayed in clear cases located close to the entrance to the ramen shop. Since we’re near Nationals Park, Hatoba also incorporates an homage to our Sapporo home team, the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters.”
“Yes, Hatoba is another Sapporo-style ramen shop, but with over 1,000 ramen shops in Sapporo city alone, we really wanted to showcase the diversity within Sapporo-style ramen shops”, said Daikaya Group partner Daisuke Utagawa. “While ramen in general is gaining popularity in the United States, not even a fraction of authentic ramen is currently represented here in this country – yet – so we’re thrilled to be able to share authentic Sapporo-style ramen with ramen lovers here.”
“The reason we haven’t opened multiple Daikaya’s with the exact same menu and selection of ramen is that we want each ramen shop to belong to its own neighborhood”, said Daikaya Group partner Yama Jewayni. “Hatoba is The Yards ramen shop. Hatoba, which means dock, imagines a ship that arrived from Japan and set up a kitchen supply showroom in the Boilermaker Building. The booths are meant to echo shipping containers and the loose furniture is layered from different eras. Oh, and the owner happens to be a big fan of the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters with fun touches throughout the shop paying homage to Sapporo’s Baseball team.
“Still keeping with the Sapporo-style of ramen, we wanted to have a little fun with Hatoba by sharing new flavors with an exciting DC neighborhood” said partner and Executive Chef Katsuya Fukushima. “Even the vegan-friendly ramen – our Tomato Curry – will be far from an afterthought.”
Hatoba hours of operation will be Sunday through Thursday 11:00AM-10:00PM, and Friday and Saturday 11:00AM-11:00PM.“
