“Dear PoPville,

Have you heard anything about the legality of renting Airbnb properties during the Stay-at-Home Order? We live next to one that is doing a lot of business right now for large groups of people throwing parties. Seems to contradict the spirit of the lockdown and was wondering if this was a problem in other parts of the district too.”

From Airbnb:

“The month of May brings with it many moments worth celebrating for District residents — from high school and college graduations to Memorial Day weekend festivities.

Under typical circumstances, Airbnb empowers our hosts to set House Rules on events and parties that are appropriate for their communities. However, these are very different times, and public health must come first. To that end, we have previously announced that we will not allow for hosts to authorize parties and events in regions where current public health mandates prohibit events and gatherings. As Mayor Bowser has extended the city’s stay-at-home order through May 15, our new policy means we are not allowing any type of party in D.C. until this order is lifted.

We want to be very clear — not only will we ban guests who attempt to throw an unauthorized party in a D.C. Airbnb listing, we will be cooperating with MPDC in any investigations relating to parties and violations of public health mandates, consistent with our Terms of Service. (more…)

Readers have been asking: “Anyone know where to donate books during Covid? I’m moving and have probably 40-50 assorted novels that didn’t make the cut. Walls of Books is, alas, closed.”

and “Does anyone know of any organizations that are still accepting clothes/furniture donations? Not everything will be able to make the move and I would prefer to not just throw things away if possible.”

“Dear PoPville,

My lot sits on an alley. I’m thinking of finally putting in a parking pad (which will require excavating about two feet of dirt and then installing permeable pavers and a gate). Any contractor recommendations.”

“Dear PoPville,

I just had the most disturbing experience in Rock Creek Park. I was walking on the trail when a runner came up behind me and took both hands and shoved me off the trail. I stumbled and almost fell, as he kept running. I yelled after him that this is not a time to be touching people, and he screamed that I should have gotten out of his way as he came up behind me, and I was in the middle of the trail. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I’m starting to think about buying a car in the next few months to help keep me mobile and sane during Covid (respecting all the shelter in place rules). Anyone done that? What about title, tags? And where do I even start to learn more besides BlueBook and my uncle?”

“Dear PoPville,

Anyone having battles to get refunded for canceled flights? im honestly in a desperate for help area, which is why im reaching out. I was supposed to travel to france this month via the airline royal air maroc. they canceled my flights, of course, and according to US and EU law (which the airline is required to abide by bc the flights depart from and arrive into the US and EU) the airline is required to provide a refund. Ed. Note: If you ever see someone holding a combat knife like the one above, do not hesitate to call the police at 911.

“Dear PoPville,

Yesterday, my boyfriend and I were on a walk and were walking up 7th street through Gallery Place. Right before we reached the corner where the PNC Bank is, a man turned to walk down the same sidewalk we were on. Before he passed us, I noticed that he was holding a combat knife facing outwards while walking, very similar to the photo above. Luckily, there was no interaction and we walked home afterwards, but seeing as this man was about a couple feet away from us on the sidewalk – what does one do in this situation? (more…)
