“Dear PoPville,

Round up of all the best local shops for holiday shopping? This year I really want to do my best to buy holiday gifts at local stores. What stores that are doing holiday gifts, baskets, etc. at all price ranges do you recommend?”

Allie also asked yesterday:

“#DC friends and strangers! This is my first holiday living in the city! Share your favorite local maker, baker, or store in the District to help me find the best holiday gifts and #buylocal” (more…)

Laura writes: “Did you hear they’re filling in the pool to expand the golf course… How many city residents are going to play the golf course versus miss that fabulous pool?”

And John sends the photo above: “looks like pool being filled in? Any word on this?”

Last we check in December 2019 it looked like it was still being dug out. Plans were to open last summer but obviously that was way off target. Perhaps more info will become available as part of the new golf deal with National Links Trust. Updates as we learn more.

“Dear PoPville,

Looking for volunteer opportunities over the Thanksgiving weekend in the DMV for those of us unable to visit family this year. Any suggestions?”

and

“My company is working remotely across the DMV, but there’s a desire for my team to rally behind a coat drive or any sort of way to give back virtually and safely. Looking for options – to support those who would feel comfortable giving from home (money donations, mailing items, etc) and those willing to drop-off or contribute in person. Appreciate any recommendations you might have, thank you!”

and

“Was wondering if anyone had a local charity that they can recommend for taking care of a family’s Christmas / Hanukkah / Kwanzaa gifts (or any other holiday I missed)?”

“Dear PoPville,

Do you know a good resource for finding a tastefully furnished apartment suitable for a busy professional? Dogs need to be okay. A weight limit is fine, the little one is only 16lbs. Mostly interested in AdMo, Mt. Pleasant, Shaw, Petworth, Columbia Heights.

Any quick tips would be hugely appreciated!”

“Dear PoPville,

As the holiday season is quickly approaching and, unfortunately, COVID-19 cases are once again surging, I was wondering how I could support our amazing local healthcare workers and first responders during such a difficult time. Back in March and April there were various GoFundMes or restaurant partnerships to help donate meals to hospital divisions, etc – is there anything like that going on now? A lot of the links I found through researching had expired. Advice on how we can help make the next two months easier on them would be greatly appreciated.”

“Dear PoPville,

Have a question for the community about David’s Tent on the National Mall. I live nearby so have seen plenty of concerts, advocacy campaigns, art installations and more take place on the National Mall. Yet David’s Tent has been there for years! And they’ve recently added another small tent (maybe for bathrooms). I’m surprised that a religious organization could have a permanent presence in what’s technically a national public park. Do permits from the National Park Service not have limits?”

Thanks to E for passing on from DC Health:

“District residents, DC Health would like to hear from you about an eventual COVID-19 vaccine. Please complete a 2-minute survey to help us learn more. Together, DC CAN stop the spread of COVID-19.”

“Dear PoPville,

I’m planning to get a Covid test this week before traveling for Thanksgiving, and I was wondering if the city’s response time has gotten slower now that cases are on the rise and more people are probably getting tested. I’m planning to get a test Thursday or Friday ahead of a Monday flight and want to be sure I’ll have the results in time. I think that would be okay, but what have people’s experiences been lately?”

“Dear PoPville,

We just received a letter that our elementary school is eliminating playground access for its students during the school day because of the CARE program. Is this happening at other schools? Basically, about 10 percent of the students will be in the school building taking online classes, and they will use the playground during recess, and so the playground isn’t available to the 90 percent of kids who will continue remote learning at home.

In the remote learning environment the playground is essential for elementary students. (more…)
