“Dear PoPville,

Saw a guy (I believe) walking down the sidewalk this afternoon (yesterday) making these chalk symbols. Between Logan and Dupont. There’s about a dozen of them, that span about a block. Not sure what they are – cutesy/nefarious, as I could envision both. Not sure if anyone else might have seen them or know of their symbolism.”

“Dear PoPville,

This family is truly in need of a Christmas miracle. Fundraiser by Bianca G. Moreno-Martinez: My kitchen is falling apart! Help! They’re dealing with a special needs boy, unemployment, the father’s stroke, mother’s injury, and a house fire that damaged their kitchen, and all survived Covid this year. Bianca, who is just 23, has been working hard to advocate for her family on Nextdoor and is getting a little help (with issues not even listed on the GoFundMe), but could really use money for desperately-needed house repairs and to catch up on their mortgage and utilities.”

Ed. Note: If this is you, please email [email protected] so I can put you in touch with OP. PoPville is not affiliated with either party, please proceed with any potential connection at your own risk using caution as you would any online encounter. For those curious about passed missed connections, some have been made and when possible I’ll try to update when/if more are made. We’ve been told our last missed connection is unfortunately not single.

“Dear PoPville,

Was hoping I can find a young woman who was in front of me at the potbelly’s around noon on Saturday (12/19/2020). She was wearing a men’s bomber jacket with a backwards baseball hat. She held the door open for me and asked if I wanted to order before her. She ordered 4 chicken salad sandwiches with everything on it – I asked her if she’s feeding a family or if its all for her. She laughed and just said “i love me some chicken salad.” We then talked about how the pickled peppers make any sandwich taste good. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Like many, our Xmas plans have changed in light of the ongoing pandemic, and while we are not at the point of throwing out our tree, we are just not really celebrating. So instead of the fancy dinners (all suggestions looked awesome last week), we’re thinking of doing a mini-smorgasbord of Asian take out, and are looking for favorite spots and specific can’t miss dishes for Chinese, sushi, Thai, Laotian etc that are doing take out Xmas Eve.

“Dear PoPville,

Back when I used to drive to work every day and the world was normal, I often saw a veteran named James at the intersection of 11th and Mass NW on the eastbound side of the street on Mass Avenue (the south side) right beside the park right before 11th. I actually hadn’t seen him in the few months leading up to the stay-at-home orders in the spring, and started to worry about him then, but as I’ve gone past there on my way to work since then and never seen him since, I’ve gotten a bit more worried about him. Thanks to Heather for asking about good spots to see The Great Conjunction.

John responds: “Any place with a clear view of the southwest horizon. A ballfield. A large parking lot. A rooftop deck. The Washington Monument hill.”

Ben notes: “You can see it easily from inside the beltway- light pollution doesn’t really factor into planetary viewing. The problem though is the weather- it’s supposed to be cloudy”

Another Bike Commuter suggests: “Shenandoah National Park- somewhere on Skyline Drive”

Any other suggestions for good spots to get a peek?

From NASA:

For those who would like to see this phenomenon for themselves, here’s what to do:

Find a spot with an unobstructed view of the sky, such as a field or park. Jupiter and Saturn are bright, so they can be seen even from most cities.

An hour after sunset, look to the southwestern sky. Jupiter will look like a bright star and be easily visible. Saturn will be slightly fainter and will appear slightly above and to the left of Jupiter until December 21, when Jupiter will overtake it and they will reverse positions in the sky.

The planets can be seen with the unaided eye, but if you have binoculars or a small telescope, you may be able to see Jupiter’s four large moons orbiting the giant planet.” (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

This fall, I (woman, late twenties) picked up a habit of taking a long walk after my work day wrapped. Sometimes I’d pass through Logan Circle while people took their dogs out to play, and occasionally I’d notice a good-looking guy bringing his gray Frenchie by in a Batman bandana. I probably saw him a handful of times around 6 pm. This is a note to the dog dad in regard.

You: tall (6’1” or so?), black shorts and spandex best classified as “doing admirable work,” calves of an angel. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I’m looking to do a basement renovation to get a C of O and trying to find contractors.

Like a lot of DC rowhome basements, mine is cramped, dated, and has exposed pipes that are low. I’d like to do all of the things to get a C of O or if the cost/benefit doesn’t make sense, at the very least make it more attractive for a tenant. (more…)
