“Dear PoPville,

The process for parents trying to volunteer in their children’s schools is terribly inaccessible.

I am a first time DCPS parent trying to sign up to volunteer with my PreK kid’s class.

I heard that the clearance process takes weeks and that I needed to complete it as soon as possible. My husband and I have both tried to submit the initial form for days, but it’s broken and gives an error that there’s no way to fix. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

On Labor Day, I was unfortunately the victim of the gold sedan flasher (this time on 15th and Fuller in Columbia Heights). I was shocked by the situation and didn’t really think to report it, but then I saw posts about (almost certainly) the same man terrorizing women in other areas of the city. That spurred me to report the crime, primarily because I know this type of repeated behavior often escalates to more violent sex crimes, and I reached out to another victim to get the detective on the case’s phone number. The way the police handled my complaint was almost more traumatizing than the crime itself. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I’m a resident on H St NE and I’d like to bring public notice to the chaos that is the No Parking/Loading zone outside the Giant on 3rd and H. About half of the block between H and I is designated as a No Parking or Loading zone, primarily because the Giant Loading dock opens to 3rd and large delivery trucks need ample clear space to maneuver and back in. “Dear PoPville,

We are at wits end with dealing with a nuisance property. For the past two years, we have tried first to be neighborly and also to deal with the landlord but to no avail. In fact, both landlord and tenants have asked us to “stop bothering them”.

The issues: (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to let people know about a terrible experience I had with a car sharing company recently, and I really hope no one’s experiencing anything similar this long weekend. A few weeks back, my boyfriend and I rented a Free2Move car for a weekend trip to Pennsylvania. We’ve done this a few times before, but this time around the car stopped working on our first night away. The company has customers use their app to unlock and start the car, and the car completely failed to connect to our phones even though we were in an open parking lot where we both had great signal. Free2Move was unable to unlock or start the car – or even locate it on their app – and proceeded to completely abandon us. They didn’t offer another car, wouldn’t pay for any other kind of way to get around or get home, and to this day have never even followed up to find out if we made it back to DC. We weren’t able to do anything on the trip other than spend our time on the phone with customer service, and walk along the highway to get food. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Love the Shrimp Boat. It’s iconic. Can you get to the bottom of this? Is Ledo Pizza taking part of the building? If this closes Shrimp Boat that will be a huge hit to this community.”

Ed. Note: In June 2022 Dcist reported:

“The Shrimp Boat is currently under new ownership. Its main fare now is soul food — chitlins specifically — and breakfast served all day. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Sunday morning I woke up at 630 am and saw that my car–parked off street in my driveway–had been stolen.

I promptly called 911 and notified the dispatcher that my car had been stolen. I gave her the VIN number, make and model of the car and she told me that police were en route to interview me.

I waited over two hours, with additional calls to 911, for the police to show up. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I have some neighbors who keep dumping yard waste and trash into my recycling bins, and the city will not pick up those bins because they keep placing trash and yard waste into our recycling bins. I don’t really want to dig into the trash myself in order to make my recycling bins useable again. (more…)
