Tonight (Tues.) there was an entirely foreseeable fire in River Terrace, which could have been prevented, and could have ended in tragedy. There’s been a long abandoned and condemned house; for several weeks a squatter has taken up residence. Many calls and messages have been sent to local leaders and authorities over weeks and months. A friend and I were recently lamenting the loss of happy hour culture post-covid. Not so much a comment on the quality of happy hour options in DC, but that the way people gather/socialize has naturally shifted away from the bar to the highboy or cocktail table. At least in our recent experience, it seems like folks are typically going out within their own social bubble, and not necessarily interested in meeting others. That, or it’s a bunch of 20-somethings getting wasted. No judgement, I used to be one of those 20-somethings! But I’m looking for a little more low-key these days. Looking for recommendations on solid happy hour (or late night) neighborhood bars that strike a balance between the two!“

I received a DOB Fine/Special Assessment Bill from the Office of Civil Infractions dated October 25, 2022 (Control number: A2300356). The fine is in the amount of $872.21 for “Cut and Clean.”
In an effort to combat climate change while helping to revive the decimated population of pollinators in our region, to follow District suggestions on conserving water, and to beautify the neighborhood, I planted native wildflowers last year. (You can read here about the environmental benefits of planting wildflowers here.)
You can see from one of the attached photo that the results were beautiful:
I created a tiny plot of wild meadow in the middle of the city. In addition to the butterflies and bees, many neighbors have stopped by during the year to complement my garden and often to ask where I obtained the seeds. It’s actually been a great way to meet neighbors. (more…)

My parents (60+) are moving to the area around the end of the year, and they are looking for an apartment for at least the first year they live here. They’re looking for a building that’s well taken care of, fairly quiet, and centrally located to restaurants/shops/etc. They’re looking for a two bedroom with parking for $3,000 or less a month. I need some assistance. Over the past three months, I have been battling my neighbor next door for construction that is quite frankly abhorrent. Mid-August, they ripped a chunk of my side of the party wall off during their demolition of the house. We had that terrible storm back then and the water rushed into my second floor causing it to pour out of a light fixture. (more…)

Has anyone experience a loss of cellular signal on the Green line right as they approach Mt. Vernon Square station? It happened a few times before to me but now I’m finding it happening almost every time I pass the stop. Would anyone know why this is the case? Could it be a dead zone?”
Update from WMATA: “The damaged fiber on the is also impacting customers on the Green Line between Mt Vernon Sq & Archives. Crews are working to make repairs, and we hope to have connectivity restored to everyone by the weekend. Thanks again for your patience.”

I am a new DC resident interested in signing up for a marathon. I’ve heard from a colleague that the Rock n’ Roll marathon is a fun course, but it looks like it is only a half marathon now – not a full course (am I wrong about that)? I also heard the Marine Corps marathon is great, but I just missed it, and am hoping to run a race sooner than next October.
Does anyone have any race suggestions? I’d love to run a course that is more scenic, if possible.”

I am hoping to find a witness to the car crash I was in on Wednesday evening, around 5pm in Dupont.
I was driving southbound on 16th street, attempting to make a left hand turn on Q just outside the Jewish community center. There was quite a bit of traffic, and the large white truck traveling the opposite direction waved me through to make the turn. At this time, a black Kia Niro came speeding down the bus lane (which is illegal to drive in during the hours of 3:30-7:30pm) and T-boned me, totaling my black Prius. (more…)
