“Dear PoPville,

I saw the lost ashes post and thought I would add this:

Twice in the past week my packages were “delivered to reception,” but after searching everywhere possible, my concierge maintains that my building never received those packages. One of those instances was through USPS and I suspect the other was as well (USPS has messed up my deliveries several times over the past couple of years). (more…)

“In 2018, when DC voters last considered an initiative to phase out the subminimum wage for tipped workers, the restaurant industry unleashed a well-funded campaign of sketchy arguments and fearmongering, dressed up as concern for workers. It didn’t sway voters, who decisively approved Initiative 77. But the industry convinced the DC City Council to thumb its nose at voters and repeal the measure.

This November’s ballot includes Initiative 82, a near-replica of I-77. I-82 would gradually raise the tipped subminimum wage of $5.35 so that by 2027 tipped workers would earn at least the regular minimum wage, now $16.10, with tips on top of that. Yes, that’s right, today tipped workers in DC can be paid $5.35 per hour–just a smidge more than the federal minimum wage in 1997, when DVD players first became available in the US and “SpiceWorld: The Movie” came out.

So, the restaurant industry is dusting off its specious old arguments. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

After years of hard handling by the DPW trash collection folks, my Supercan had to be replaced. The broken lid let the rain in, despite my duct-tape efforts, and then the lift bar was pulled out, so the can had to be lifted into the truck by hand. Okay, so I sprang for a brand new one — just $30 for us oldsters.

The new one arrived, and now what to do with the old one? (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I am reaching out for help from the community. I am guardian for a woman whose beloved dog Ryder was euthanized earlier this month. I am writing to ask help in locating the cremains of the dog, “Ryder”. His actual owner is in a nursing home and is devastated.

UPS alleges to have delivered the cremains to my office, 419 7th St. NW, Suite 405. They say someone signed “Aguilera” and accepted the package which included a rosewood box and a paw print. I am requesting that the community be put on notice to look for it. I can be contacted as follows: Cynthia Jefferson, 419 7th St. NW, Suite 405, Washington, DC 20004; (202) 247-8808.”

“Dear PoPville,

Just had another cyclist scold me (last night), while we were both in motion on Georgia Ave, about my lack of a rear light. However, my bike has both a flashing LED front light and a rear reflector. I know that bike safety is a common topic here, so I thought it would be worth calling out two points:

1) Each bike, when in use at night, is required to have a front lamp and a red reflector on the rear. A rear light is NOT required, but is recommended. A helpful resource is the DC Bike Law Pocket Guide

2) Don’t yell at other cyclist while in motion in traffic! Distractions are dangerous

Language from the Pocket Guide: (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I’m assuming others have had this same issue, but I wanted to let readers know that if you haven’t received a mail-in-ballot (which DC automatically sends), then you need to call DC Board of Elections to request a new ballot. Electronic ballot requests ended on 10/15 and now you can only request a ballot to be sent to an address different from what’s on your voter registration.

DC BOE’s tracking system shows my ballot was mailed 21 days ago. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I knew they had been installed, but others didn’t because twice today, cars almost slammed into my driver’s side, trying to get over at the last second and avoid running into these.

Why on earth would DDOT install these pedestrian corrals(?) in the middle of a lane on a busy thoroughfare like 9th Street?

Steeb sums it up succinctly: (more…)
