In addition to DC Public Schools being closed and a Snow Emergency in effect starting at 9am (don’t park on a snow emergency route) – more closures from ALERT DC: (more…)

IE Make sure you’re not parked on a snow emergency route!!

From the Mayor’s Office:

“Mayor Muriel Bowser deployed her DC Snow Team at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon to pretreat the District’s primary, secondary and National Highway System routes in advance of Wednesday’s forecasted precipitation. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning on Wednesday to be in effect from 2:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. In addition to the pre-storm anti-icing operation, the DC Snow Team will be monitoring the storm throughout the night into morning and will begin plowing roads as necessary. Residents and motorists can register to receive important weather alerts from the District on their devices by signing up for AlertDC at alertdc.dc.gov.

Due to the likelihood of significant snow in the District, Mayor Bowser has declared a Snow Emergency in the District in effect from 9:00 a.m. tomorrow through 7:00 a.m. on Thursday. A Snow Emergency means that motorists may not park vehicles along corridors designated as snow emergency routes, which are posted with red and white “Snow Emergency Route” signs. To locate a towed vehicle, call (202) 727-5000.

Property owners – residential and commercial – are reminded that they are required to remove snow from their sidewalks within the first eight hours of daylight after a snow event ends. Residents who are homeowners and live in their own homes and are age 65 or older and/or living with a disability may be eligible for an exemption from this requirement.”

From DC Public Schools:

“DC Public Schools will be closed tomorrow, March 21, 2018 due to the snow emergency.”

From WMATA:

“Metro is preparing to fully deploy resources in response to an expected winter storm that could significantly impact travel on Wednesday, March 21. Based on the current forecast, Metro is advising customers of several service changes, including bus service that will operate on a Moderate Snow Plan.”

This event was scheduled well before yesterday’s brouhaha.

From Alert DC:

“The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Washington DC from late Tuesday night into Wednesday Morning for an accumulation of 2 to 4 inches of snow.”

From DPW:

“The National Weather Service is forecasting a wintry mix of snow, sleet and rain overnight on Tuesday, continuing through Wednesday morning. The DC Snow Team will fully deploy with more than 200 heavy and light plows starting at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday to pretreat treat all National Highway System, primary, secondary and residential routes within the District. Residents and motorists can register to receive important weather alerts from the District on their devices by signing up for AlertDC at alertdc.dc.gov.

“While Tuesday is technically the first day of spring, Mother Nature doesn’t seem ready to let go of winter just yet,” said Department of Public Works (DPW) Director Chris Shorter. “To prepare for the potential of several inches of snow, the DC Snow Team will fully deploy on Tuesday to pretreat all District roads and be ready to plow as necessary.”

To prepare for the snow and Wednesday morning commute, residents are encouraged to heed the following tips: (more…)

From the National Park Service at 4:47pm Monday:

“Using recent temperature data, the current progression of the blooming phases, and the weather forecast for the next ten days, the National Park Service is forecasting the start of the peak bloom period of the cherry blossoms will now occur during March 27-31. On March 1, the peak bloom was projected to start between March 17 and 20. While the mathematical models still show the blossom reaching peak on March 18, this week’s cooler than forecast temperatures have necessitated moving the projection to the last week of March.

Peak bloom occurs when 70% of the Yoshino cherry trees, the most abundant of the 12 species around the Tidal Basin and East Potomac Park, are in bloom. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I thought you would like to see the tree that’s still being suspended by power lines on the corner of Hamilton St. NW and North Capitol. Power went out on the lower half of the block (closer to New Hampshire Ave) Friday sometime between 8-10am. A crane, Pepco and some tree experts showed up Saturday afternoon to inspect the situation, with the only progress being that they cut the power on the rest of the block. Tree guys and Pepco said they didn’t know what to do, and that the specific power line the tree landed on was an intersection of power down N. Capitol. They said they hope to have it fixed by Wednesday (!!!) but they’re not sure. (more…)
