Yesterday the Adams Morgan BID released a potentially interesting bit of news for the former Joint Custody space on 18th Street:

“We learned today that Erik Miller will be opening DC Vape Joint soon at 2337 18th Street, NW in the lower level under Pharmacy Bar. Their sales hours will be 11 am to 9 pm seven days a week.”

A search on google doesn’t reveal much but it does have a cached facebook page that says:

“DC Vape Joint. DC Vape Joint is a full service electronic cigarette retail shop and vape lounge; creating a vaping lifestyle with a healthy alternative to smoking.”

Would this be the first vape lounge in the District?

Thanks to Dan Enterline for sending:

“The plaza at CityCenter is now open, and all decked out for the Cherry Blossom Festival. (Pic taken Wednesday evening, March 20, 2014) The photo was taken from the SE corner of the plaza facing NW.”

A permit has been issued for Del Frisco Steakhouse which we first heard about back in Nov. 2012:

“PERMIT ISSUED,950 I ST NW UNIT 501,”CONSTRUCTION OF FIRST TIME TENANT IN NEW BLDG. AT CITY CENTER DC, PARCEL 5, DEL FRISCOS DOUBLE EAGLE STEAK HOUSE RESTAURANT SEATING 80 ON THE LOWER LEVEL, 89 ON 1ST FLOOR, 199 ON THE 2ND FLOOR, TOTAL SEATING 368, MAX CAPACITY 420.”

In June of 2012 Del Frisco’s Grille opened in the long vacant former Les Halles space at 1201 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW.  You can see the Steakhouse menus here.

A couple of weeks ago I also posted some retail scuttlebutt about a Hermes, Gucci, D&G, Tiffany&Co as possible tenants. Here’s an update from a good source – No D&G, No Gucci but yes to a Louis Vuitton and a Paul Stuart and a Tiffany & co is still possible.

And here’s another of the new fountain at CityCenter from PoPville flickr user clif_burns:

One of the last brick and mortar camera shops has closed their doors for good. A reader sends word yesterday:

Calumet Photo bought Penn Camera, a DC institution on E Street and elsewhere, a while back after Penn declared bankruptcy. Today, without notice, they shuttered all their U.S. stores, which includes Penn Camera. Sad to see a DC institution for photographers disapper so suddenly.”

Penn Camera was located at 840 E Street, NW. For those with deep pockets – there is still the Leica store at 975 F Street, NW.

We got a little retail shuffle going on in the strip by Eastern Market. Groovy is moving next door into the first floor of the former Monkeys’ Uncle space and a new chocolate shop – J. Chocolatier (formerly located in Georgetown) will be taking over the second floor (just on weekends to start.) J. Chocolatier has been popping up out front of 321 7th St, SE the last few weekends. Their website says:

“J. Chocolatier was founded by Jane Morris in early 2007. Jane always loved baking, but began experimenting with chocolate after being told by her allergist that she was allergic to it. Determined to continue enjoying this perfect food, she began eating smaller quantities of the finest chocolate she could find — making every bite count.

She soon began handcrafting truffles and taking them to friends, family and coworkers. At their urging, she founded J. Chocolatier and sold her chocolates to a few exclusive shops and wine bars in the DC area. In 2009 Jane opened the J. Chocolatier retail boutique in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, DC. Although the retail store was a big hit, the historic building and the long, hot DC Summers didn’t mix. So in March 2013 J. Chocolatier moved back online. Currently, J. Chocolatier treats are also available at CocoVa in Adams Morgan, and Veritas Wine Bar in DuPont Circle.”

And now on Capitol Hill:

No word yet on who will take over the Groovy space.

Earlier this week @CityCenterDC tweeted the photo above:

“Look who popped up at #CityCenterDC today! Plan your @katespadeny purchases at http://www.katespade.com!”

And last week when we noted coming soon signage for Longchamp, a reader commented some interesting scuttlebutt about who else is coming:

“Hermes, Gucci, D&G, Tiffany&Co”

After (at least) a year of wondering we finally know who is coming into the former Swiss Upholstery Shop next to the Cardozo-Shaw laundromat (at 11th and Fairmont) – a dry cleaners. A reader had heard some scuttlebutt that a cafe/bakery could be coming to the space. Sadly, depending on your perspective, that didn’t work out.

Short Articles about Long Meetings reports:

“No dry cleaning will be done on the premises — only pick up and drop off. There will also be alterations and shoe repair available.”

They also note that this space was previously home to a grocery store and dry cleaners before the upholstery shop.
