It’s been a while since we first heard back in 2012 that Lee Jewelery would become a liquor store. Turns out it’s actually a section in the store and in the beginning it will be half liquor store, half jewelery store. The liquor store component should open in about two weeks. A worker at the store tells me they will slowly be expanding the liquor section. When I peeked in yesterday the liquor component filled up three large rows.
A reader adds:
“Now you can get your liquor, jewelry, and luggage all in one spot!”

More exciting news for Upshur Street in Petworth – a new bookstore is coming next door to (from owners of) Petworth Citizen in the former Hair Impressions space. From an email:
“Join our Bookstore Founders Club and help open our new bookstore!

1407 S Street, NW
Big news from Salt and Sundry’s Instagram account:
“Big news, everybody! A second S&S is in the works! See you later this summer, 14th Street.”
The photo says S Street, NW. So I’m thinking this has to be one of two spots – either the former Pulp space which for a minute looked like it would turn into a doggie daycare but that coming soon sign has since vanished. There’s a lot of foot traffic here and other retail like Home Rule and Current Boutique. I think they would kill here.

However, if the doggie daycare is still coming perhaps they’ll come across the street to the retail space that was briefly home to the custom clothing store near the 2 birds 1 stone bar.
Anyway Salt & Sundry opened it’s first spot in Union Market – their website says:
“Washington, DC tastemaker Amanda McClements brings to life her passion for stylish entertaining with Salt & Sundry. The award-winning boutique features a beautifully curated selection of housewares, linens, gifts, artisanal foods and covetable vintage finds.
Also in store: Farm tables hand-made by Amanda’s father, a North Carolina craftsman who creates furniture out of salvaged and locally milled wood. His pieces are one-of-a-kind and showcase the rustic beauty and patina of aged wood.
In addition to being a go-to source for gorgeous tableware, home goods and gifts, Salt & Sundry hosts special events and demonstrations with local chefs, mixologists and food personalities in the store.”

1728 14th Street, NW back in December 2013
Looks like some potential competition for Room and Baord located at 1840 14th Street, NW. Potentially huge update for the new building coming to the former International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers building in Logan Circle. District Source reports that West Elm has filed for a permit for the retail space at 1728 14th Street, NW. We have previously learned that plans for the building included:
“The current design anticipates the first two floors as retail space with two floors of office space above.”
West Elm currently has a DC location in Georgetown at 3333 M Street, NW.

From a press release:
“The Cheeky Puppy, the go-to resource for design- conscious District pet lovers, announced the launch of its flagship retail shop. The newest Dupont Circle boutique features practical provisions and specialty items for those who know that pets aren’t like family – they are family.
“After adopting my Labradoodle Schroeder, I was struck by the lack of pet-oriented retail in this very pet-loving part of the District,” said Courtney Stamm, founder and owner of The Cheeky Puppy. “Thus the idea for The Cheeky Puppy was born.”
Nonpartisan in its politics, and bipartisan in the dogs versus cats debate, The Cheeky Puppy believes that having a pet is a privilege and should not contribute to the degradation of the planet nor the two and four-legged friends with whom we share it. Bearing that in mind, merchandise will largely be sourced from socially and environmentally responsible manufacturers.
“The Cheeky Puppy is a fantastic addition to Dupont Circle, particularly as we aim to revitalize vacant storefronts and to diversify the retail and services on offer,” said Bill McLeod, executive director, Historic Dupont Circle Main Streets. “With so many pet lovers traversing the neighborhood, The Cheeky Puppy will provide a special outlet for dog and cat lovers alike.”
This is the first retail venture for longtime DC resident and owner Courtney Stamm who traded positions in nonprofit fundraising and management with organizations ranging from the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Human Rights to Food & Friends to pursue this entrepreneurial venture.
The Cheeky Puppy resides in the Wonder Building – one of Dupont Circle’s art deco landmarks – at 1709 Connecticut Ave at R St NW.”

“the botanica at 2441 18th st is leaving after 10+”
I can’t say I was a big patron but I’ll miss their big window display. This is the spot located above Sakuramen and before that the pizza spot that clashed beautifully with Botanica. Their facebook page says:
“50%! April 15 will be out last day, please stop for your last chance at our unique merchandise.”
“The Botanica was established in 1995 by Martha Bedoya in an effort to bring Santeria to the Washington, DC community. Ms. Bedoya is a santera herself since 2000 and has been involved in the religion since 1993.”
