A liquor license placard has been posted for a new liquor store, Grand Cata, in the Lyric building at 440 K St, NW. And in other retail news for the Lyric – District Source reports:

“The owners of Baked & Wired, a popular Georgetown cafe, are negotiating a lease at Mt. Vernon Triangle’s The Lyric, 440 K St. NW, to open a new bread shop and cafe. They are hoping to lease 4,000 square feet to house a bread bakery, retail space and cafe seating.”

That would be a big score for Mt. Vernon Square.

From a press release:

One Eight Distilling, only the second distillery to open in Washington D.C. since prohibition, has released bottle and label designs for the first round of spirits to be sold by the distillery upon its opening in Summer 2014.

One Eight’s Rock Creek White Whiskey will be distilled and bottled in its warehouse from locally-sourced rye grain. Rock Creek White Whiskey’s design honors the history of mills and small distilleries in D.C., such as the historic Pierce Mill and adjacent distillery in Rock Creek Park. The laser cut image depicts the leaf of a beech tree, found throughout Rock Creek Park. Future whiskey releases will also explore this design theme.

One Eight’s Ivy City Gin, named after the neighborhood where the distillery is located, will also be distilled from locally-sourced rye grain and infused with botanicals in a dedicated gin still. The Ivy City Gin design evokes early city maps demarcating city lines with boundary stones. This intricate label is screen printed directly onto the bottle.

District Made Vodka will pay tribute to the ancient roots of vodka by also being distilled from rye but at the same time employing the latest filtering technologies for a smooth and clean flavor. The District Made Vodka design combines an urban industrial design with a hand-made aesthetic that is central to One Eight’s distilling style.

More good news for Takoma Park – yesterday we learned about a new gym, MAD Fitness, coming to 7302 Carroll Ave and now we have word of who is coming in next door – Spring Mill Bread Co:

“Spring Mill Bread Co. will be opening a new location at 7300 Carroll Avenue in Takoma Park, MD. Spring Mill Bread Co, a small batch baker, will offer its successful combination of soft crust breads, sweet treats, soups and sandwiches in a café setting. With plans for both indoor and outdoor seating, Spring Mill Bread Co. will renovate the 1,800 sq ft space and model it after its other locations. A Fall 2014 opening date is anticipated.

“The management and bakers at the Spring Mill Bread Co. are very excited to have finally secured a location in Takoma Park’” says owner Katherine Rurka. “Twenty years ago, the TPSS Food Coop and its members were the first business that offered Spring Mill Bread Co. the opportunity to tap into an ever-growing market in natural foods. We will continue to offer our products at the TPSS Coop to ensure that their loyal members have access to the products to which they have grown accustomed.”

Spring Mill Bread currently has a DC location on Barracks Row at 701 8th Street, SE. You can see their menus here.

Last week we learned that a Potomac River Running store would be coming to the former Cowgirl Creamery space in Penn Quarter. At that time a commenter mentioned that they heard this meant the Cleveland Park location would be closing. Sadly, they were right. I stopped by the Cleveland Park spot and they confirmed that they would indeed be closing. They didn’t have an exact date but expected it to be sometime in May.
