From an email:

“Above is the link for our OFFICIAL GRAND OPENING this Saturday (7/30/16)! Cookie Wear has ascended to new heights, largely because of the support we’ve received in our beginnings! From our family, friends and especially the Petworth community as a whole, we’ve been able to sustain a business and now grow!

It is our hope that we’ll see you, and all others you attached to you as we celebrate our new beginning!

The Cookie Wear Boutique in its early beginnings, started in a basement less than 500 feet. That location because of old faulty wiring within building’s infrastructure caught on fire, and destroyed what Michelle Noodles, her family and her collective built. (more…)

From a press release:

“Artist & Craftsman Supply, an employee-owned chain of retail stores, has been supplying creative communities for over 30 years. Customers visiting Artist & Craftsman Supply’s other locations have often commented that they’d like a store in DC. The Portland, Maine based company has responded by opening two! Each store brings over 5000 square feet of hands-on shopping for professional artists, novices, crafters and kids. These quirky shops are staffed by passionate and knowledgeable local artists obsessed with a high standard of customer service.

In recent years, several major art suppliers have closed their doors, but Artist & Craftsman Supply has continued to grow. They’ve benefited from the DIY movement, which expanded greatly during the 2008 recession, and continues to be fueled by Etsy, Pinterest, and YouTube instructional videos. Artist & Craftsman’s stores continue to thrive due to the hands-on nature of their products, knowledgeable sales clerks and their willingness to adapt to the needs of the market.

Artist & Craftsman Supply has been very successful in many other locations by following its unique philosophy of adaptation: seeking out and inhabiting affordable and non-traditional spaces passed-on by conventional retail businesses. They purposefully put stores where artists live and work, connecting locally and tailoring stock accordingly. By providing items of interest for artists and non-artists alike in a fun and colorful environment, Artist & Craftsman Supply is an experience in and of itself.

“Bucketfeet’s mission is to create a brighter world by sparking conversations that bring people together.” hoto by Joy Asico

Through its responsive commerce business model, Bucketfeet — with shoes ranging in price from $62 to $148 for men, women and children — gives artists the opportunity to receive royalties for their accepted shoe designs, which are manufactured exclusively for Bucketfeet. There’s a different artist and a different story behind every shoe, bolstering Bucketfeet’s mission to create a brighter world by sparking conversations that bring people together, create mutual respect, foster shared understanding and, thus, build a better world. From J Crew:

“We’re currently a TBD on timing of this store opening based on our construction team and working on schedules etc. but it still looks like sometime in 2016. This could of course change. That being said, it will be men’s only product, with some exciting partnerships featured.”

This was the location of a “Questionable Death” at an underground gay sex club back in 2009. Quite a transformation.

Their Facebook says they opened about 3 weeks ago.
