La Vie (French-Mediterranean cuisine), District Hardware and Bike, Vigilante Coffee, Cordial Craft Wine, Beer & Spirits and CVS also coming to The Wharf in 2017

“The following is an updated list of restaurant and retail offerings coming to The Wharf in 2017, as part of the development’s Phase I grand opening:

Social Restaurant Group’s 9,800-square-foot concept La Vie, their largest venture to-date, will feature French-Mediterranean cuisine that includes an extensive moules-frites menu, a wide selection of sweet and savory tartines and a variety of coastal-inspired beverages. Situated along The Wharf’s most expansive and stunning vistas, their space boasts a 1,100-square-foot waterfront terrace, and serves the resident pool deck above. La Vie also includes private access to a 5,000-square-foot rooftop terrace, poised to be Washington’s premier events space.

District Hardware and Bike, the nearly 50-year old family-owned hardware store, full-service bike shop and now café and water sport retailer, is expanding from its current location in Foggy Bottom. Their new 6,300-square-foot location will be designed by Natalie Park Design Studio and is the latest in a series of expansions for the store, which has been owned and run by the Conway family for three generations. To strengthen the concept, District Hardware and Bike has teamed up with local coffee roaster, Vigilante Coffee, to help design and launch the new café and coffee bar.

Cordial Craft Wine, Beer & Spirits by Eric Rohleder is expanding from its current operation in Union Market. His 525-square-foot location at The Wharf will feature a water view and products from independent importers and boutique distributors across the globe.

America’s largest pharmacy retailer CVS will occupy a 9,000-square-foot space at The Wharf.

Which is better – Express Lanes or Self Check Out at Target?

“Dear PoPville,

Forget about seeing a cashier at the Columbia Heights Target.

Target in Columbia Heights has recently installed self-checkout. Now after the self-checkout addition 5 out of my last 6 visits I noticed the express checkout is closed even during the peak use of 5-6 PM during the week. I’ve had to self-checkout.

The express lane similar to the express lane at Whole Foods was extremely fast and successful. The self-checkout is slow and has the typical equipment error issues and slower lines. Some CVS stores recently got rid of their self-checkout for that reason and theft. Target had even expanded the express section of checkout over the last year because it was successful. So why the recent change?

Being a curious individual I asked a manger why this change happened. Her response was first this was a request form the customers. Well this customer requests a return to the old way.

Then after continuing the conversation she said “this allows us (Target) to keep less employees on the floor.” Directly decreasing the number of jobs needed on any given shift. In a community where jobs are needed and customer is always appreciated Target is directly decreasing the number of staff by their mangers admission. It is curious that this change also allows them to reduce the number of employees in advance of an increased minimum wage. Looks like Target found a way around that. Now only if they used that staff to keep their shelves stocked….”

Books for America Closing at the End of June “Fantastic Sales” Until Then

“Our Dupont Bookstore is Closing!

On November 22, 2005 we opened the doors on our bookstore at 22nd & P in Washington, DC. It has been an amazing decade on the edge of Dupont Circle but unfortunately it will soon be time for us to close the doors on the store for the last time. While the bookstore will be closing, we will be continuing our book collection and library-building efforts and more than ever, we need you to donate as many books and other items as you can!

As many of you know, like many other non-profit organizations we have had a tough time financially for several years now and we now must take some time to regroup, reorganize and whatever other “re-” cliche management-speak term we can come up with :) The management of the building the store is in has been very patient and very kind in allowing us to struggle on for a while and I would like to thank them for everything they have done for us over the years.

The store will close at the end of June. Until then we will have fantastic sales on our books, CDs and DVDs. Our hope is that we will be able to open another store in DC sometime soon, but we do not yet have a timeline for that.

So, I would HIGHLY recommend you come on in and stock up!! We will keep bringing new inventory for the next couple weeks. Beginning immediately, all books at the store are 25% off the marked price; CDs and DVDs are $2 each and if the price sticker is dated more than 30 days old, the CDs and DVDs will be just $1. This applies to all CDs & DVDs – singles and box sets.

All of your book purchases and donations and helped us grant more than 1,000,000 books to local schools, shelters and many other organizations. Thank you so much for that.

On a personal note, I have spent much of the past few years working out at our warehouse in Fairfax and I have greatly missed all the regulars at the store who became friends over so many years. Hopefully we will be able to open another bookstore soon and I will be able to see you all once again. Well, most of you. Some of you were, um, well…you know who you are :)
