Ghibellina recently opened up in the old HR-57 space back in May. Their website says:

“Ghibellina is an Italian Gastro Pub brought to you by the owners of Acqua al 2, Ari Gejdenson and Ralph Lee. The inspiration behind this project was drawn from their days living in Firenze. On a daily basis the two would eat lunch at their favorite restaurant, Trattoria Mario and fell in love with the idea of creating a comfortable place where diners feel at home every time they walk through the door. The name is derived from the street, Via Ghibellina, where the two shared an apartment on one end and own an American Diner on the other. Executive Chef, Jonathan Copeland, has teamed up with this duo and has matched their passion and dedication to executing an authentic Tuscan menu in the heart of the 14th street Corridor.”

You can see their menu here.

Anyone check them out yet?

“I noticed a sign for a Korean BBQ restaurant coming soon. It’s also a door or two down from the recently opened Flash bar.”

Back in mid-May we learned a new Thai and Asian tavern, Ching, was coming to Shaw. The liquor license application said:

“Tavern serving Thai and Asian cuisine on hot top grills with a seating capacity of 150. Total occupancy load of 199. Entertainment consists of occasional DJ and live music. Summer Garden with 30 seats (subject to change based on final Certificate of Occupancy for Summer Garden).”

“Dear PoPville,

Le Pain Quotidien is coming to that hold out property at 4th and mass in between the office bldg and apartment building right there. I know a few months back you had mentioned it may be a 7/11 but turns out the developer is putting in an LPQ. Should be great for that neighborhood.”

The reader hears the lease has already been signed and LPQ should probably open in a few months. Stay tuned.

Back in early June we learned that Halal Kabob House was coming to the former Piccante Pizza space on 18th Street. Their website says:

“Our menu is based on simple grill Kabobs where the taste and quality stands for what we believe in. We wanted to create a neighborhood restaurant that serves delightful Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi cuisine. The restaurant is simple, casual and inviting. Although small, the jovial atmosphere is sure to make newcomers feel welcome. Curries and Kabobs dominate the menu, but there is also vegetarian and fish section as well. The lentils and chickpeas are hearty and well seasoned. The naan bread, prepared on the premises, is delicious. The desserts are extraordinary sweet. Get entertained today by the delicious food.”

Ed. Note: Their menu is not up to date on their website. Here’s what the posted out front (sorry if it’s a bit small). Updates when they announce an opening date.

Yesterday we learned that Bloomingdale’s Rustik would be opening a second location in Brookland.

Owner Diton Pashaj updates us on the plans:

“The new location will NOT serve pizza. It will be heavily influenced in Mediterranean Cuisine but of course will include some traditional American dishes and favorites.”

Diton also shares that the new spot will likely be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Ed. Note: Yesterday some readers expressed concern that Brookland’s pizza scene was already well served by Menomale and an upcoming &Pizza.

“The new location of Mediterranean Spot on 18th St in Adams Morgan opened last night. We stopped in to check on the owner this evening and the place looks beautiful! They are going to have outdoor seating and pizza at this location.”

The OP adds: “We went back at 10pm last night and I tried the pizza with chicken shawarma on top – it was delicious.”

A couple of weeks ago we learned their 15th and U St, NW location would be applying for a liquor license, sidewalk seating and adding brick oven pizzas.

For about four years we were taunted with Coming Soon signs for Wagamama in the old Olson’s bookstore at 418 7th Street, NW. Even though we learned Wagamama had pulled out in Oct. 2012 we were still subject to the giant Wagamama lady looking down on us:

Alas, all remnants have finally been removed. Maybe a new tenant will soon be taking over this prime space?
