Thanks to a reader for sending the above note:

“Got home yesterday (live at Blagden Alley) and this was taped to our front door. Seems that “The American” bistro will face some opposition at the ANC.”

In late July we learned The American would be a bistro from Xavier Cervera hoping to come to the Downtown Boxing Club space in Blagden Alley.

Do you think the proposed bistro is a “commercial use that is far too intensive  the historic alley and the surrounding residential area”?

SLATE Wine Bar + Bistro – known for its extensive selection of unique wines and their ability to make every meal memorable – is launching its new menu Friday, September 20, 2013. The contemporary American dishes will promote seasonal fall flavors with expanded menu selections.

“I’m excited our new fall menu provides more variety for diners as we have increased the number of the items on our lunch, dinner, and brunch menus. I am especially pleased we have added more vegetarian and seafood items,” says SLATE Manager, Daniel Lledó.

Incorporating diverse flavors, highlights of SLATE’s fall menu include the Spicy Eggplant appetizer; Pan Seared Sea Scallops with bacon-corn chowder; Bistro Filet with mushroom-peppercorn sauce, fries, and asparagus; and local Rockfish with tomato, fennel and asparagus. Guests wanting to pair cheese with their wine may be excited by the new Cheese and Charcuterie selections like Canya de Cabra and acorn fed Lomo Embutido.”

Back in March we first learned a Noodles and Company was coming to one of the retail spaces in the newly renovated building on 19th Street just south of M. This the old Mezza Luna location pre-renovation. Well there’s finally some progress here – they’ve applied for a liquor license:

“Noodles & Company is a fast-casual themed restaurant serving global noodle dishes, salads, desserts sodas, juice and milk. Total Capacity including the summer garden and sidewalk café seats of 28 is 101.”

Hours will be Sunday through Thursday 10 am – 10 pm Friday & Saturday 10 am – 11 pm.

I hear they are shooting for a November opening.

Back in late January we first learned that a new bar and restaurant called the Fainting Goat would be coming to the former Urban Essentials space at 1330 U St, NW. They’ve resolved the protests against them and are on track for a late November/early December opening. I stopped in for a very early look a couple of days ago and I think folks are going to be very very happy.

First of all the design team is the same team that designed Bloomingdale’s Boundary Stone and Red Hen and more recently designed Baby Wale by the Convention Center.

In speaking with co-owner Greg Algie I learned a few more details about the space. There will be 129 seats total of which 26 are bar seats. Speaking of the bar, there will be 12 beers on tap and one prosecco on tap.

The menu will be kinda like a gastropub but without pretension. Greg described it as quality food done simply, also food that you’d want to make at home but just don’t have the time to do. He envisions the space as a real neighborhood spot where folks could end up 2-3 times a week.

You can get an idea of how the space will be laid out from the photos. There will be a small bar and high top tables down front where folks can hang out on the first floor. In the lower level will be the kitchen and private dining room. And the upper level is sorta split in two with proper dining on the left hand side and a larger bar on the right hand side. And you’ll of course be able to order food in all the spaces.

I learned a bit more about the design (stained glass coming) but I’m just gonna wait for it to be built because the photos will do far better justice than my words.

At any rate, Greg is a super down to earth guy and I think that is a good indication that this going to be a very chill spot. Not to mention the great name – Fainting Goat. Apparently back in the day when Greg and his buddies would go out to the bars, when engaging with strangers Greg would – well have a look at a clip:

Have a look at the inside after the jump. (more…)

Alba osteria

Getting closer to some Italian eats in Mt. Vernon Square. Back in July we learned that Alba Osteria would be a:

From an email:

“Kapnos, Mike Isabella’s young 14th Street Greek restaurant is beginning brunch service this week. Brunch will be served Saturdays and Sundays from 11am-3pm and feature Greek-influenced takes on morning classics like Baklava French Toast and Spit Roasted Chicken and Waffles. The full menu is available  here.

In addition to the new brunch menu, Kapnos has recently opened its patio. The al-fresco space located along W Street adds over three dozen seats to the restaurant.”

From Ben’s Chili Bowl:

“There are some new food options coming to Reagan National Airport and I am happy to say that Ben’s Chili Bowl will be one of them! The deal is done and we are working hard on a design that will bring the food and flavor of U Street to National Hall in the airport. This new location will be just to the right of Terminal B (the center terminal) and will be pre-security so regardless of what airline you are flying or if you are taking a trip at all, everyone will have access to Ben’s Chili Bowl at National Airport. And we will have plenty of seats for customers to dine-in as well as carry-out that can go through security and be carried on the plane.

Look out for Ben’s at DCA around May of 2014.”

And at the corner of 10th and H St, NE – Ben’s has applied for a liquor license:

“Restaurant serving American style food with 191 seats and occupancy load of 266. Summer Garden with 44 seats. Sidewalk café with 38 seats.”

Hours of operation hope to be Sunday through Thursday 6 am -2 am and Friday & Saturday 6 am – 4 am.

Ed. Note: Last week we learned of some scuttlebutt that Ben’s planned to open an Arlington location as well.
