From an email:

“What time is it – why, it’s brunch time, with Lauren, who brings her pastry passion to Libertine Restaurant this Saturday, September 28th, starting at 10 a.m.

Lauren Whitledge lands with Libertine as the executive chef after stints at DC Coast Restaurant, the Liaison Hotel’s Art and Soul Restaurant and Ps7′s Restaurant. Whitledge has shown a remarkable versatility since joining Libertine last spring. She left her fingerprints on the specialty-cocktail and draft-cocktail menus at Libertine. She also developed Libertine’s brunch menu, which includes the following:

· Hash-brown casserole: Cheesy hash browns with country ham and two fried eggs.
· Maple Bacon Rolls: Gooey cinnamon maple rolls laced and topped with bacon.
· Stuffed French toast: Brioche toast sandwiched with dried strawberries and cream cheese.
· Chocolate Chip Silver Dollar Pancakes: Five little chocolate chip buttermilk pancakes with maple syrup and crème fraiche.
· Buttermilk biscuits with eggs, ham and cheese.
· The pastries are made fresh daily, including blueberry muffins, pumpkin beignets, and chocolate chip cookies.
·
Whitledge also will be in command of the savory items on the menu:
· The Bistro Burger
· Salad Lyonnaise
· Spicy cilantro wings
· Shrimp Andouille and grits

Check back with us as Lauren’s brunch menu grows and changes with the seasons.

Brunch commences every Saturday and Sunday at 10:00 a.m.

Thanks to a reader for sending word that Mr. P’s is coming to Shaw at the corner of 6th and Rhode Island Ave, NW. They are currently located at 514 Rhode Island Ave, NE. Anyone ever try them at that location?

Back in Dec. 2012 we first learned a new tavern serving international street cuisine would be moving into the former Collage Cafe space on T Street next door to St. Ex. In March we learned some folks were protesting their liquor license. I’m happy to report that they’ve cleared that hurdle and received their building permits as well. The house was originally built in 1887 so there is some serious work to be done. And there has already been some serious demo:

I spoke with co-owner Rose Previte who tells me that after getting their building permit yesterday, they are aiming for a November/December opening. Plans are for a 12 person bar towards the back and table seating in the front with a small outdoor patio out front and in back. While they are still searching for a chef, the cuisine is inspired by Rose’s travels (with her journalist husband) overseas for three years. She tells me that the one commonality of the countries she lived in was great street food. And great street food is what she plans to bring to DC. It will be a casual neighborhood spot – there won’t be reservations taken or a host/hostess. The vision is to give the space the feel of an outdoor market place.

Can’t wait to see how this turns out. Stay tuned for updates as construction progresses.

Eater DC shares the good news about Diego reopening in about three weeks:

“Diego has found the new chef needed for the restaurant to reopen its doors. Billy McCormick, the EatWell Group veteran who most recently worked at the revamped Virtue Feed & Grain, will next give Tex-Mex food a shot.”

They note that the menu has completely changed so we’ll be sure to post it when it becomes available.

From a press release:

“Frederik De Pue, Chef/Owner of Table and 42° Catering, announces Menu, a combined market, restaurant and bar. Menu will be located in the space currently occupied by Azur, his modern seafood restaurant in the Penn Quarter neighborhood of Washington, D.C. Azur will close Friday, September 27 and the space will undergo a brief revamp before reopening as Menu in January, 2014. De Pue’s new concept will draw on the warmth, accessibility and intimate scale that have made Table, his 45-seat neighborhood charmer in Shaw, such a success.

“The decision to revamp the format is part business and part personal,” says Chef/Owner Frederik De Pue, “I love the Azur concept, but it wasn’t a perfect fit for a space that size, and as both the owner and the chef, I am in a position where I can make necessary changes quickly. I want to build something that this neighborhood is lacking, and that is also more warm and welcoming – something that reflects my passion for clean, uncomplicated comfort food. The Penn Quarter area doesn’t have an active market where customers can gather to shop, meet and eat, and that’s exactly what I am trying to create with Menu.” (more…)

A couple weeks ago we learned a Chop’t was coming to the Navy Memorial Plaza next to the Paul bakery. More food options are coming to the plaza. Native Foods Café is coming to the vacant space next to 701 Restaurant.

According a liquor license application:

“Restaurant serving vegan food with a seating capacity for 66 and total occupancy load of 98. Side Café with 40 seats.”

And for those who remember the space that used to have the good pizza on the other side of the plaza – It’s going to be a Plan B Burger Bar. Washington Business Journal reported:

“The burger-centric restaurant and bar has signed a lease for retail space at 801 Pennsylvania Ave. NW. It will be the group’s first restaurant outside of New England.”

Their website says they offer beef, burgers, bourbon and beer. You can see their full menus here.

Updates as both spots get closer to opening.
