From a press release:

“Acclaimed Chef/Owner Richard Sandoval is pleased to announce his newest venue, Toro Toro, will open March 31st at 1300 I Street, NW. The name Toro Toro plays on the Japanese word for tuna and the Spanish word for bull – a Pan Latin steakhouse with a generous selection of small plates.

Sandoval and his partner Ivan Iricanin recently tapped Chef de Cuisine Stephen Hertzel to oversee Toro Toro’s kitchen. He will be preparing a flavorful variety of hot and cold small plates, along with an exceptional selection of steaks. The menu will also note where meat and seasonal ingredients are sourced with an emphasis on supporting local and regional farms. A great spot for “power lunch,” guests can anticipate menu item ranging range from $4 to $16 for small plates, salads and sandwiches and $26 to $45 for steak entrées. Toro Toro will also offer a weekday lunch buffet priced at $25 per person.

Toro Toro will also showcase an innovative beverage program, spearheaded by Sandoval’s National Beverage Director Rob Day. Guests will find handcrafted cocktails made with ultra-premium Latin spirits, including two barrel-aged drinks, the Buena Vida and the Manhattan de Toro, along with a well curated collection of 130 wines from around the world, and 35 wines by the glass. “Dear PoPville,

Over the last several days I’ve noticed Mixtec restaurant being closed. Do you know what’s going on with it?”

Earlier this month Washingtonian reported:

“One of Adams Morgan’s oldest restaurants may close after 40 years. Mixtec owner Pepe Montesinos tells us he’s unsure of the restaurant’s future.”

I took a peek in the window on Sunday and plates and dishes were piled up:

Sadly it seems they decided not to take an extension like next door neighbor Pasta Mia. We judged Mixtec back in 2009. Will update when we learn who will take over the space.

The Rhode Island Insider reported:

“The owner, Bill Perry, is a life-long DC resident and lives in the neighborhood next to his restaurant. Generally speaking, they are planning to have a casual sit-down place featuring “healthy food made from as many locally-grown ingredients as possible.”

and CityPaper adds a cool detail:

“This brewpub, however, will be a little different from other brewpubs and restaurants around town: The waitstaff won’t accept tips. Instead, Perry says he plans to pay a “living wage” of at least $15 an hour.”

Standby for a late summer/early fall opening.

Terrible news tweeted to us last night from @blondetexasdem:

“Omg @PoPville just found out #AdamExpress closing @ the end of the month!!!”

Back in 2011 Adam Express temporarily closed due to a health problem with Mrs. Bae. There was a huge outpouring of support and Adam Express reopened a few months later.

News of this closure will be devastating to many.

Back in October I shared some scuttlebutt about a Dolcezza Gelato taking over the once planned for unknown Taylor Gourmet themed spot in the former Mid City Deli space at the corner of 14th and P St, NW. Ed. Note: I’m aware the previous sentence is a long one and quite possible a run on. Apologies. In January we noted major demo had started. Though Dolcezza denied plans for a new space at the time, CityPaper says its for real:

“Unlike Dolcezza’s other outposts, this location will have a to-go window that allows people to order gelato and coffee from the street.”

Thanks to a reader for sending word:

“Looks like Michelle Obama was at Kapnos again this [last] evening. There were secret service agents outside who wanded us down before we entered, but we had no idea who it was until we caught a glimpse of her dashing out with agents all around her later in the evening.”

Last we learned the “high-energy steakhouse” was shooting for a Spring opening:

“In the heart of the city’s Dupont Circle neighborhood, STK’s vibe-driven scene will be based around a bustling bar, while banquettes and bistro seating will offer diners a menu with an extensive selection of delicious steakhouse classics with a twist. STK also breaks the mold of a conventional steakhouse with its sexy, social atmosphere and vibrant bar scene featuring DJs spinning.”

From a press release:

“WHAT: Washington, D.C. (March 13, 2014) – Washington prepares to welcome its iconic Cherry Blossom season, an event that commemorates the friendship between Japan and Chef José’s Andrés adoptive country, the United States. In this fraternal spirit, Andrés also wanted to share the lesser-known, but equally enthralling, story about the many years of comradeship between Japan and José’s native Spain, a bond that began four centuries ago. To honor these relationships, Andrés and his team at barmini, led by Cocktail Innovator Juan Coronado and Executive Sous Chef Johnny Spero, have created unique cocktails and savory bites inspired by the traditions and cultures of these countries.

The repertoire will include original drinks like Yoshimi Kicks the Bad Guys, shōchu, fresh squeezed lime and grapefruit juice, simple syrup and shiso leaves; La Japonesa, coconut cream, matcha cream, white rum, simple syrup, and sudachi; Nakamura, cucumber vodka, Junmai Ginjo sake, fresh lime juice, cucumber water and Wasanbon sugar; Shima ilo Ōjo, shōchu, Nigori sake, yuzu, and calpico; Sakura Tori, gin, Sakura honey, amontillado Sherry, sudachi, and orange bitters; Tokyo Soul, pisco infused with jasmine green tea, St. Germain liqueur, fresh grapefruit juice, and club soda. Prices for the cocktails range between $12.00 and $20.00. Snacks include Unagi Steam Bun, steamed bun with eel, red shiso, cucumber pickles, black sesame, and mayonnaise; and the Uni Deviled Egg, sea urchin, egg, and paprika. Prices for these dishes are $10.00 and $7.00 respectively. barmini and minibar both forge ahead as the heart of Andrés’ creativity and innovation, where he and his team push boundaries on flavors and textures.

WHEN: March 20th – April 13th. barmini is open Tuesday through Thursday from 6:00 PM to 1:00 AM and Friday and Saturday from 6:00 PM to 2:00 AM. To make a reservation please visit our website www.minibarbyjoseandres.com

WHERE: barmini is located at 855 E St, NW, Washington, DC.

WHY: The National Cherry Blossom Festival takes place every year in Washington, D.C. to commemorate the 1912 gift of 3,000 cherry trees from Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo to the nation’s capital. This year, Chef José Andrés wanted to bring another part of Japan to Washington by telling the story of the long-standing friendship between Japan and Spain. Last June marked the 400th anniversary of the arrival of Hasekura Tsunenaga to Coria del Rio, Spain, a small town near Seville where to this day, hundreds of local Spaniards bear the name “Japon.” Hasekura was a 17th century samurai who led the initial Japanese diplomatic delegation throughout Europe and is considered the first Japanese Ambassador in the continent.”

“Dear PoPville,

Looks like significant progress has been made at Amsterdam Falafel on 14th. Any news on an opening date?”

Good news and bad news – another reader writes:

“I recently read on the website for the Shaw Dupont Citizen’s Alliance — the group behind the failed proposal for a liquor license moratorium on 14th Street — that the group has unanimously voted to protest a liquor license for the Amsterdam Falafelshop, which as you have reported is set to open at 1830 14th Street. When I contacted the owner to express my dismay and offer my support, he sounded genuinely perplexed by the decision, noting that the ANC has not only not protested but affirmatively supports the new restaurant and explaining that the only alcohol he plans on serving is Dutch beer. The protest hearing is April 9, and the owner would appreciate any letters in support of his application. In the meantime, he will open by only serving soft drinks. He’s planning a soft opening for March 23.

Apparently the SDCA is living up to its promise to protest every new liquor license application of any kind within its boundaries in response to its loss on the proposed liquor license moratorium, which is outrageous because the community could not have been more clear about its wishes. In any event, I write to invite all supporters of Amsterdam Falafelshop to either attend the ABRA protest hearing on April 9 or send letters or send letters of support.

The ABRA hearing is at 10:00 am on April 9 at the Reeves Center, 2000 14th Street NW, Fourth Floor, Washington DC 20009. Those who cannot attend the hearing in person can write ABRA in support of the applicant at [email protected], referencing Licence Number ABRA-093449.”
