Thanks to the folks at Potter’s House for letting us know:

“You had a post late last year about The Potter’s House closing for renovations. Wanted to let you know that construction on the renovations has started at The Potter’s House. We plan to reopen in September.”

Their website says:

“When we re-open in 2014, our cafe will have a whole new style. While remaining affordable and accessible, we will have an increased focus on the health of our bodies and the food system as a whole.

We are working with the Food Works Group to develop a seasonally rotating menu that is sourced from local farmers and producers. Everything is still in the works, but you can expect sandwiches, salads, soups and sides with a Southern accent.

We are in conversation with some of the country’s leading coffee roasters about sourcing direct trade beans for our espresso and pour over coffee program. The Potter’s House was one of the first spots in DC to offer espresso, and we are excited to return to this tradition of hospitality.”

and

“We are an independent bookstore with a special emphasis on spirituality, social issues, and cultural studies. Our curated collection also includes a selection of literature, poetry, and children’s books.

While the bookstore is closed for renovations, we can still fulfill special orders. To place an order, email [email protected] or call 202.232.5483.

When we return in 2014, we will have regular author events and reading groups, a selection of handmade gifts and cards, and an IndieBound online bookstore complete with e-books, essential reading lists, and reviews.”

In Feb. we posted some scuttlebutt that an &Pizza would be taking over the former Freshii space by E Street Cinema. Coming soon signage has now been posted:

In January we learned that a Peet’s Coffee and Tea would be coming to the former Citibank space at the corner of 11th and E St, NW across the street from E Street Cinema. And by the by – anyone know if any of the other Peet’s (former Caribou spots) have been converted and opened already?

Coming soon signage is now up for the 11th and E Street location:

Yesterday many folks were dismayed to learn that Yo! Sushi had permanently closed in Union Station. Many took to twitter asking @YOSushi why? @johnsolit shares with us an interesting response:

“Yes Union Station has closed due to changes with our strategic partner. Opening in downtown DC by end of this year!”

Previously we learned another Yo! Sushi was planned for 675 H Street, NW in Chinatown but that deal fell through in Aug. 2013 and that space is now slated to become a Sports Zone Elite. I’ve inquired where in Downtown DC they are planning to open and will update as more info becomes available.

“Dear PoPville,

I’m writing with an important update on Adam Express. Their buyer backed out after all the paperwork had been signed to sell the property. Because they have no buyer, they will no longer be closing on 3/29. They are open indefinitely until they can figure out what to do. They wanted this information disseminated as soon as possible because news of their closing has inundated them with more business than they can actually handle.”

Ed. Note: This is bittersweet news as I stopped by last week to take some photos and say good bye to the Baes – they seemed so happy to be retiring. While they will be deeply missed, I hope they find a new buyer soon.

UPDATE: Thanks to a reader for sending the photo above:

“Terrible sign telling people. Just saw someone taking out the register / computer.”

@39Candles tweets us:

“Anyone know why Yo Sushi in Union Station is closed? Sign says closed for the weekend …”

They are closed permanently. I put in a call to Union Station and they say they are closed for good. Yo! Sushi opened up in Union Station over the summer of 2012. They were also supposed to open a second location at 7th and H St, NW in Chinatown but that deal fell through a while ago. I guess conveyor belt sushi just isn’t our thing.

From a press release:

“Grillfish, an EatWell DC company, announces a new chef, and new brunch & beverage menu, to launch this Saturday, March 22, 2014.

Created by the recently-appointed Head Chef, Kerry Tate, the new offerings feature Grillfish’s staple seafood in dishes like Oysters Benedict, Fish Tacos & Eggs, $1 oysters on the half shell, and Shrimp & Grits. The menu also provides a little something for those looking for a land-based option, such as an Apple Stuffed French Toast.

The new brunch menu was the first undertaking of Head Chef Kerry Tate, who is incorporating new local offerings into the menu, with an emphasis on produce sourced directly from EatWell DC’s EatWell Natural Farm in La Plata, MD. Chef Tate came to EatWell DC’s The Heights in 2013, and now will be directing the menus at both restaurants.

Grillfish has also completely revamped the brunch beverage menu, which now features a “Build Your Own” Bloody Mary option, and five oyster shooters. The shooters range from traditional (“The Classic” features Ketel One vodka and house bloody mary) to those with international flair (“Red Sun Rising” features Living Jewel Junmai Sake and a wasabi kombu chip). The new beverage menu, rounded out with six new cocktail offerings, was created by EatWell’s Mixologist Kyle McNeel and Grillfish’s Head Bartender Deepak Acharya.

Brunch is served at Grillfish on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm.”
