MM 1974 Menu

From an email:

“Mellow Mushroom Pizza Bakers, which was founded 40 years ago as one of the first artisan, stone-baked pizzerias in the country, is rolling back their prices to 1974.

To mark their anniversary on August 20th, for one day only, Mellow Mushroom will be re-introducing selections from their original menu including a small cheese pizza for $2.50. All coca-cola products will be 30 cents with beer, including Budweiser, Michelob or Pabst Blue Ribbon, sold for 75 cents per drink.”

Back in February we first learned that a Native Foods Cafe was planned for the former Sizzling Express space at 18th and M St, NW just off Connecticut Ave.  A Native Foods Cafe is also planned for Penn Quarter in the Navy Memorial Plaza. Thanks to a reader for sending the updated photo above and Veg News reports:

On September 30, vegan fast-casual restaurant Native Foods Café will open its first East Coast eatery in the heart of Washington, DC. Opening at 1150 Connecticut Avenue in the Dupont neighborhood, Native Foods is known for artisan, plant-based fare like bowls, burgers, wraps, tacos, and specialty salads. The Chicago-based restaurant group plans to open a second location in DC later this year.”

Thanks to a reader for sending this awesome accolade about Rose’s Luxury from Bon Appetit magazine:

Later, as I’m finishing my whiskey and paying the bill, I realize why those people were willing to wait two-plus hours for a table in a city whose food culture is otherwise known mostly for power lunches: Rose’s is a game-changer.

There is a lot that sets it apart, starting with the warm, farmhouse-style dining room, kitchen-counter seating, and atrium glowing with string lights. There is the knowledgeable and friendly service. And, of course, the eclectic menu: Southern comfort food threaded with globe-trotting ingredients and ideas from Southeast Asia, Mexico, Italy, and France.

While chef-owner Aaron Silverman is clearly concerned with the food that goes out on his plates, he pays even closer attention to the people eating it. And that’s when it hits me: Rose’s isn’t just in the restaurant business; it’s in the making-people-happy business.

Read the full account ‘To find out what makes a meal here so special, I spent 12 hours trailing Silverman on a weekday in early June. Let’s just say the brilliance of Rose’s isn’t by accident.’

The Diner’s facebook page says:

“**CAUTION**
Work in progress!! We’ve closed shop for just a couple of weeks for a little facelift. We hope you’re missing us just as much as we’re missing you all!”

And in an email I’m told:

“Refresh in progress! We hope to have the Diner reopened by mid-next week. Stay tuned for more details and we thank everyone for their support, and we look forward to feeding DC 24/7 again soon.”

Finally some good news about the Sri Lankan and South Indian restaurant, Banana Leaf, coming to the former the former Clover Market space in Chevy Chase. I stopped in on Saturday and was told they finally worked out their permitting issues and are hoping to open by the end of the month. These are the same folks from New York City. You can see their NYC menu here.

Apparently Meats & Foods passed their health inspection! Thanks to all who tweeted and commented. @johnmdav tweets us yesterday:

“@PoPville Meats and Foods opened this afternoon”

And this morning a commenter writes:

“Rave: “Meats & Foods”, the restaurant version of “13th Street Meats” opened yesterday. Nice little place with good meat. You can get cooked links to eat in (very small seating but outdoor seating expected soon) or to go, or uncooked links for your own at-home grilling experience (about $2.50 a link). They do have beer in cans (and wine I think) as well as other beverages, and are planning to have a few “sides” available soon to add to their basic bag o chips. Meats are made fresh daily (Just like DCity Smokehouse) so it is possible they can run out of things from time to time, just consider it a good opportunity to try a new link and enjoy the variety. I can give two thumbs up for the Poblano Pepper, Italian, Lemon Basil Chicken, and Veggie Dog. Welcome to the hood guys, glad to have you!”
