Not sure when Cafe Mayo closed but this little joint off Wisconsin is now Undraa’s Cafe. I just had a simple breakfast sandwich ($3.49 as it should be) but I’m definitely going back for some Mongolian dumplings:

“Dear PoPville,
A few years ago, PoPville reported on the sale of the old Jackie Lee’s building on the eastern end of Kennedy. [Ed. Note: At the time listed at $1,300,000.]
Well, it’s on the market again, [for $749,000] and they’re targeting a restaurateur:
Solid ALL BRICK Commercial property in Northwest DC. Zoned C2A. Main level is Restuarant and upper level can be used for other commercial purposes. New wiring, 2 New HVAC, (1 on each level), and New hot water heater. Lots of work has been done to this property; new owner just need to finish from where the seller left off. Good conveniently located to main traffic. THIS WON’T LAST LONG.
It would be awesome to have a great restaurant in this beautiful and historic building. Fun fact: before it was Jackie Lee’s it was Hofberg’s Delicatessen.

1730 Connecticut Ave, NW
I hadn’t even realized they closed! My Way Gourmet Deli only opened back in June 2015. Updates when we learn who takes over the space. Can’t say I was a fan of the vinyl sign…

From a press release:
“On Rye, a modern sandwich shop with a creative and lighter twist on Jewish deli staples, will open on November 11 down the street from the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C.’s Chinatown neighborhood. Founder Ilyse Fishman Lerner draws from her heritage to refine and trim down counter-service favorites with inventive recipes and techniques, serving up these creations in a 2,550-square-foot, 60-seat space.
“We’re thrilled to open our permanent location, particularly given the great response we’ve had to our stand at Nationals Park,” said founder and first-time restaurant owner Ilyse Fishman Lerner. “Our goal is to change the perception of Jewish sandwiches and other deli items as ‘heavy, special occasion food’ to everyday fare that you can eat several times a week, while still maintaining a connection to the comfort and tradition of the cuisine.”
On Your Plate
On Rye’s menu focuses on traditional Jewish deli sandwiches and other classics that have been elevated with fresh ingredients and modern, more health-conscious cooking techniques to reduce salt content without sacrificing flavor. Of the ten sandwiches on the menu, half are vegetarian or can easily be made meat-free.
A riff on the classic “pastrami on rye” sandwich features a choice of Wagyu corned beef, Wagyu pastrami or roasted turkey breast– served with spicy mustard on marbled rye bread. Reubens abound (more…)

wdc wrote in the Juice Joint closing post:
“Speaking of closed… Did I miss an announcement about the Sweetgreen at 19th and L? That place was ALWAYS packed, lines out the door. What happened?”
jcd responds:
“The grilled cheese place next to it closed a few months ago. Reportedly, the whole building is going to be re-skinned, presumably with glass walls, the same way that many other downtown office buildings are. The Staples will probably be next to close.”
LG replies:
“Uh, I’m literally eating a salad that I picked up from the Sweetgreen on 19th and L a half hour ago. It’s still open! Or at least, if it’s closing for construction, it hasn’t closed yet.”
dolf hears:
“This location has always been a trouble spot for sweetgreen. Golden Triangle is a drain and rent is crazy. No weekend traffic, no dinner traffic. It’s consistently been one of their worst performing locations. With winter coming, lunch traffic will drop in half (if not more). This is a long time coming from what I’ve heard. One other DMV location may also be on the chopping block.”
The official word from Sweetgreen around lunch time is that they are:
“open with a line currently out the door.”

1829 M Street, NW
Welp that’s a bummer (for many.) Back in September Amsterdam Falafel confirmed they were looking to open up another location on M Street. Sadly that deal never worked out (which I’ve confirmed with Amsterdam Falafel this morning.) The OT (original tipster) who correctly shared that Amsterdam Falafel was looking here now hears that an Indian restaurant has signed a 15 year lease. Stay tuned.

Thanks to a reader for passing on this fundraiser for El Rinconcito II:
“Hey friends of el Rinconcito!
Last week, my friend Claudia’s restaurant, el Rinconcito on Park Rd, caught fire. The damage was extensive and the insurance only covers part of the cost.
Right now, they’re closed for business while they work on repairs. That sucks – every day they are closed is a day without pupusas!! So we are calling on all of you, pupusa lovers, to help us get them back up and running as soon as possible! The neighborhood isn’t the same without them.
If you come by with proof of a donation of $10 or more in the first week they re-open, you get a free pupusa!”

In happier Vermont Ave news, Kanji-kana has opened up across the street from the Juice Joint. Anyone take an early taste?

Check out their menu after the jump. (more…)
