Red Rocks (11th and Park) and Pete’s Apizza (14th and Irving) are two super popular pizza spots in Columbia Heights. Washingtonian broke the news on Red Rocks’ expansion yesterday:
“The beloved Columbia Heights restaurant RedRocks is opening a second location of its wood-oven-fire pizza joint. The owners just signed a lease on a space on the 900 block of King Street, right across the street from the Majestic.”
I was holding off writing about Pete’s Apizza because there are a few details still being wrapped up. But since word is spreading of pizza expansions I thought I’d share some scuttlebutt. While this is not 100% sealed yet I’m hearing that Pete’s would like to open two more locations. Speculation is that one could be in Clarendon and one on Wisconsin Ave. I’ll update with exact addresses as info becomes available.
I’m a fan of both spots but since we’re talking about them – I have to ask – do you have a favorite between the two?

WBJ’s Missy Frederick broke the news on this spot last week. The Cereal Bowl’s Web site says that they’ll be opening at 3420 Connecticut Ave, NW which is the old Starbucks location (near the Uptown theater). Well I’ve never heard of a cafe focusing on cereal so this should be interesting. Do you guys think it is a good idea for a cafe?

I received the greatest email this weekend from Manager Phi Nguyen announcing the grand opening of Columbia Heights’ newest Pho spot this Thursday. It turns out the name will be Pho Viet and I stopped by on Sunday to take some sneak peek photos (though there was a bit of finishing touches still going on).

It’s relatively small but actually much bigger than I initially thought. It looks like it will be able to sit around 25 or 30. The manager was super nice and encourages any patrons to make recommendations that they’d like to see. So the grand opening is Thursday and those dining in from the 17th – 20th will receive a 20% discount to celebrate the opening. You can see their take out menu below (the dine in menu was still being finalized though I imagine it won’t be too different):
Most of the Pho is $7.50 and most other options are in the $7-$8 range. I can’t wait to try this place out and see how it compares to Pho 14 on Park Road.
Pho Viet is located at 3513 14th Street, NW (at Parkwood Place) and will be open Tuesday – Thursday: 10am – 9:30pm; Friday – Saturday: 10am – 10:30pm; and Sunday: 10am – 8:30pm: Closed Monday. Delivery will be available with a $15 minimum (202-629-2839).

I mentioned a few new places coming to H St. NE last Monday. At the time I said I had a few more that were new to me as well. Pictured above at 1016 H Street, NE will be Liberty Tree. The alcohol application says it will be a seafood and brick oven pizzeria.

And at 1110 H St. NE will be a new restaurant (to be named later) featuring Asian cuisine.

And finally is the new spot, Vendetta, that is coming to 1350-1362 H St. NE. I think I may have mentioned it before because I was pretty psyched to see that it’s jukebox will feature opera and Italian music.

We learned back in August that this great new restaurant name was coming to 17th and R Streets, NW. While not open yet, I just noticed they put up this sweet new sign. I still can’t believe how hilarious that name is…

Annie’s is located at 1609 17th St, NW in Dupont. We’ve previously discussed where to get the best steaks in town here. So how does Annie’s match up? Yelp also mentions some breakfast and brunch options. I’ve never heard of a steak house with breakfast options. So is this a better brunch spot or steak house?

Fusion located at 4815 Georgia Ave, NW near Moroni and Bros. has long been one of my “new” favorite restaurants. I can hardly believe it has already been a year since they’ve opened. The owner, Barry, pictured above could be one of the nicest proprietors I’ve met (and I’ve been fortunate to meet many). Barry previously worked at Rasika and Bombay Club and has brought that quality of dining to Petworth. But more than just the great food, he has created a warm neighborhood spot where regular diners often greet each other like old friends. This was evidenced at the party thrown to celebrate the anniversary. It was filled with an amazingly friendly and diverse crowd. So congrats to Barry, his family and colleagues, and I look forward to many more years of quality dining at Fusion.

It’s been a long time coming but I finally got to check out the Chipotle coming to Columbia Heights on 14th Street just south of Kenyon. And I have to say, well, it’s a Chipotle. Which is to say it’s awesome. Though, it’s much like many of the other Chipotles I’ve visited. But I’m very excited to have this option not too far away. I suspect it is going to be insanely crowded.
Here’s a bit of potential scuttlebutt – I ran into Council Member (Ward-4) Muriel Bowser at this pre-opening event and she said she’s going to encourage a similar opening in Ward 4, perhaps in one of the spaces by the Petworth metro.

While I’d love an Italian Bistro I also think Chipotle in Petworth would be a nice addition (though fear not my love for Taco Bell has not faded…) (more…)

Seafood & Crab located at 1936 14th Street, NW (just south of U) is no more. This spot has brought me a lot of material for the blog over the years. We’ve talked about whether or not Seafood & Crab is a bit redundant, how long it has been having a grand opening and of course judged the food here. I assume many folks won’t shed a tear but I’ll certainly miss the awning.
And across the street there is a big sign mentioning Bargain World is going out of business as well. Tough day for this section of 14th…
