I have been trying for two years to get a permit to build a retaining wall in my backyard from the Department of Buildings. Over this time, I have submitted 5 or 6 versions of the design, hired two separate engineering firms (structural and civil) in order to respond to DOB’s comments, and enlisted the help of my ANC commissioner (who got nowhere). “Today, the Department of Employment Services (DOES) announced a new Unemployment Insurance (UI) Benefits System that will launch on Monday, February 5, 2024. This system will streamline applying for and processing UI benefits claims to increase ease of access for residents in need, and will feature a new identity verification component, managed in partnership with ID.me, designed to counteract benefits fraud and ensure claimants receive their benefits.

“I am ecstatic to share a significant milestone in our commitment to better serve the District. Our unemployment system has undergone a comprehensive upgrade to enhance the overall experience for claimants and employers,” said DOES Director Dr. Unique Morris-Hughes. “Streamlined customer communications, an easy mobile user experience, and robust fraud prevention tools will be a game changer for everyone that uses this new system.”

“Attorney General Brian L. Schwalb today announced that the nation’s third largest tax preparation company, Liberty Tax, will pay $550,000 to more than 7,300 DC residents who were misled and overcharged for tax preparation services. As part of a settlement resolving the consumer protection lawsuit that the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) filed against it, Liberty Tax must also pay $200,000 to the District and permanently end the deceptive marketing and pricing tactics it used across the US. “Mayor Muriel Bowser and the Department of Public Works (DPW) announced that the annual Christmas tree and holiday greenery collection will begin on Wednesday, January 3, 2024 and run through Saturday, March 2. Residents who live in DPW-serviced homes and buildings will be able to place their greenery curbside, either in front of their home or in the tree box, for collection. Trees and greenery collected between January 3 and March 2 will be turned into mulch for distribution to residents throughout 2024.
