“This car has been sitting (illegally parked) in the same spot since September 2018 (six months as of this writing) — the oldest citation dates to September, and has been collecting paper ever since. City records indicate the vehicle has over $3000 in outstanding unpaid parking fines, but for some reason, it does not get booted or towed.”

“Dear PoPville,

In September 2015, my wife and I bought our home in the Woodridge area of D.C. While it was further out than was ideal, the price was right and the neighborhood seemed up and coming. For the most part, the up and coming part remains true. However, there is an exception. A neighboring house is the blight of our existence in Woodridge. Further, it is the historic blight of many of our neighbors.

Here is some transactional history on this vacant and blighted fire, health, and safety hazard of a house: (more…)

From the Mayor’s Office:

“Today, Mayor Bowser kicked off Potholepalooza 2019 and celebrated the beginning of the Maryland Avenue NE Streetscape Project. Due to record rainfalls in 2018, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has seen a significant increase in reports of potholes across the District.

“Potholes are frustrating and dangerous, and with a record-number of potholes this year, we’re, once again, doubling-down on our efforts to get them fixed,” said Mayor Bowser. “As Potholepalooza gets started, we continue urging residents to report potholes and other dangerous road conditions to 311. Working together, we can ensure that our streets, sidewalks, alleys are safe for all who use them.”

Since January 1, 2019, DDOT has received 7,550 pothole service requests and filled more than 5,300 potholes. For comparison: Last year, between January 1, 2018 and March 18, 2018, DDOT received 3,295 requests. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Update: I walked out the house [Saturday] to get my weekly stash of fresh bagels from Call Your Mother and came upon new activity at Georgia Ave. and Morton Street NW. This time crews appear to be either modifying or removing the islands.

Within about a week of the initial installation the islands had proper and plentiful signage and the lanes had been properly marked. I’m definitely curious about what’s happening here.” (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

This weekend I received a bizarre notice from DC OTR saying that they have no record of my 2015 tax filings — and that I need to reply within 30 days with proof of my 2015 filing or face penalties, fines, and assessments.

It seems that quite a few of our neighbors got a similar letter/notice from the DC OTR stating that OTR has no record of their DC tax return or payment from 2014 or 2015, that they should share their return and a canceled check with them as proof that of filing, and that there will be assessments and penalties if they don’t do this within 30 days. From the Mayor’s Office:

“Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser presented her Fiscal Year 2020 (FY2020) Budget and Financial Plan to the Council of the District of Columbia as part of the District’s annual budget process. The $15.5 billion budget proposal includes investments in affordable housing, education, families, transportation, public safety, seniors, protecting DC values, and more.

“This budget is about ensuring that everyone living and doing business in the District is giving and getting their fair share,” said Mayor Bowser. “This is a budget that advances our DC values and addresses our city’s most pressing challenges – a budget that recognizes that these are very good times for Washington, DC, and asks our commercial property owners to share some of the upside so that we can invest more in keeping DC affordable for Washingtonians across the income spectrum.”

Investments in the budget reflect feedback gathered from residents during the Mayor’s annual budget engagement forums as well as senior and DC Government employee telephone town halls, agency budget recommendations, and mayoral programmatic recommendations. The FY2020 Budget marks the District’s 24th consecutive balanced budget.

Below are highlights of new investments and initiatives in Mayor Bowser’s FY2020 budget proposal. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

During the renovation of MacFarland Middle School last summer, construction crews removed pavers from the parking lanes on Iowa Ave to put in new water pipes and other infrastructure. The pavers were left on a pallet in the 4400 block.

Construction ended and the school was opened in August, but the pallet of pavers remained. There was still work going on in the general area, but by December it was clear the pavers had been forgotten. (more…)
