Ed. Note: Let me tell you about back in the day

From the Mayor’s Office:

“Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced that the District will host its inaugural Open Streets event on Saturday, October 5, 2019, along Georgia Avenue, NW. Nearly three miles of the avenue will be free of vehicular traffic between 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., allowing residents to walk along and in the roadway and enjoy a wide range of activities for all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. From the Office of the Attorney General:

“Attorney General Karl A. Racine today filed a lawsuit against a local home contracting company and its father-son management team–Precision Contracting Solutions, LP and Derrick and Stephen Sieber–for deceiving consumers about home construction services and damaging homes across the District. In the complaint, the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) alleges a pattern of illegal behavior, including misrepresenting the quality of goods and services offered, negotiating contracts under false pretenses, breaking contract terms, and damaging property. With this lawsuit, OAG is seeking to stop the illegal conduct, to secure monetary relief for harmed consumers, and to recover penalties and costs for the District. (more…)

Brutal. From a Gallup news report:

Americans are much more likely to oppose (64%) than to favor (29%) making Washington, D.C., a separate state. These results are consistent with past polling on the topic by other firms, which also found majorities opposed to the idea.

Although D.C. residents want their city to become the 51st state, their fellow Americans disagree. In fact, Americans have consistently opposed D.C. statehood in polling over the past three decades. The issue has become politicized, given that adding D.C. as a state would practically guarantee increased Democratic representation in Congress. As such, a D.C. statehood proposal is unlikely to pass unless there were a Democratic majority in the House of Representatives, a filibuster-proof Democratic majority in the Senate and a Democratic president.”

“Dear PoPville,

I know some police departments massage their data to keep crime stats low, but I cannot believe that my assault/robbery incident was downgraded to a “lost items” and “misplaced items” incident. Worse, I downloaded the “Crime Incidents in 2019” and saw that my attack was not listed in the data set.

I was attacked and robbed by two men while walking down 7th and N Streets NW in Shaw a few weeks ago. There was a passerby that kindly called 911 and two police officers showed up within a minute. (more…)

From Councilmember Grosso’s office (yesterday):

“The following is a statement from Councilmember David Grosso regarding Councilmember Evans’ latest dishonesty to the Council about the nature of his relationship with lobbyist Bill Jarvis:

“Tomorrow, the Council will consider resolutions to remove Councilmember Jack Evans as chairperson of the Finance and Revenue Committee and hire a law firm to conduct an investigation into his potential violations of the Council’s Code of Conduct. While I appreciate that the Council is finally acting to take Councilmember Evans’ misconduct seriously, it is frustrating that it has taken us this long to act to protect the Council’s reputation and hold our colleague accountable.

“Regardless of the actions we take tomorrow, given new revelations over the weekend of Councilmember Evans’ dishonesty, I believe the public trust in Councilmember Evans is irreparable and it is in the best interest of the Council and the residents of the District of Columbia that Jack Evans resign as the Ward 2 Councilmember. Short of that, I will be offering an amendment that would also remove him from all committees until the conclusion of this investigation. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to send along a frustrating saga of a developer getting its way by blocking roads in my neighborhood daily.

The condo construction site, at 6th and Wiltberger Streets NW, constantly blocks the entire width of Wiltberger. This means traffic — or if an emergency happens, first responders — can’t get through for the entire block. This has been happening daily, and the portable crane that lifts drywall and other materials into the new nearby condos have no permits, per DDOT’s searchable tool. (more…)
