bocce cop

“Dear PoPville,

I’m a member of the Stonewall Bocce League, an all-inclusive, LGBT Bocce League. Last night was our first game, and an MPD Officer comes up (I didn’t get his name), and asks if he can toss a ball! He actually did really well, and helped our team out quite a bit that round! Kudos to this police officer for making our evening so fun, and for being an ally! Makes me proud to live in a city with a police force that not only works to keep its citizens safe, but also is committed to engaging with the community.”

A reader reports:

“Today [Wednesday] I saw without a doubt the man accused of child abduction at the Air and Space museum approach a little girl near the Ellipse at around lunch time. I was startled because he stopped his bicycle very quickly and then leaned over to the little girl who was sitting on the ground eating a hot dog by her self and leaned over and said something to her. She looked like she was struggling to understand what he was saying. I stopped and stared at him and after a few moments he started up on the bicycle again, only to ride a few seconds and then stop. It was very very odd behavior and it immediately reminded me of the attempted abduction at the Air and Space museum. I googled it on my phone, but with the sun glare and the small video, I was unable to ID the guy so I just kept walking on. I did take in his appearance, though: overly-taught face, ponytail, and wearing a backpack with the initials “BD.”

I did a more thorough search when I got back to a real computer and without a doubt, that was him, Bernard Derei. (Had I known his name earlier, I would have alerted the first officer I came into contact with, given the initials on the backpack) I left a message on their hotline.

I feel sick that this scumbag is still at these dirty antics and is preying on children enjoying the monuments and cherry blossoms and that I didn’t put two and two together until now. I last saw him crossing Constitution Avenue on 15th Street biking towards the Washington Monument.”

A reader reports:

“Drive by shooting around 4 PM at 5th and O NW. Can neighborhood residents call the 3rd District and request the 24/7 police presence we had last summer. Also call their ANC Reps and request action on this.”

another writes:

“I was walking home from the metro and 5th street is blocked off from N st to O st. Apparently there was a drive by shooting that happened at 4pm today with a school bus behind the shooter. The kids are safe and was picked up by another school bus later. They’re still investigating now.”

A reader passes on from a neighborhood/school listserv:

“There is a man who is described as having dark skin, in his 50-60s, with an accent, wearing jeans, black baseball hat, jacket with black sleeves and driving blue/green Mazda 5 who has been approaching children and asking if he can give them a ride or if he can take them to school.

Our kids go to inspired teaching and he has approached children there during recess and after school, and was filming them from his car yesterday. When staff approach him, he flees. Police have been notified.

A man fitting the same description has also been reported approaching children in the yards of their homes and at bus stops near Beauvoir, Eaton, and CCBC preschool in Upper NW.

Please monitor children closely and report any similar issues to MPD.”

Ed. Note: The Montgomery County Police Department, which was the first to alert, have updated their initial report:

“The Montgomery County Police Department-Special Victims Investigations Division has been investigating allegations regarding an attempted abduction that occurred on Friday, March 11 in Chevy Chase and was reported by two children, ages four-and-a-half and seven. Based on the investigation thus far, there is no credible information that indicates that this incident was an attempted abduction.

Detectives have reinterviewed the children, who are the only known witnesses. At this time, many details remain unconfirmed.

Investigators continue to collect information and continue to follow possible leads.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call detectives at 240-773-5400.

The Department thanks the community for their ongoing assistance with this investigation and encourages residents to call police when suspicious behavior is observed.”
