“Dear PoPville,

On Monday my wife just encountered a scammer at 21st and P St NW. He was a white male with brown short hair and a trimmed beard wearing a black jacket and baggy jeans. He was well spoken and claimed to be locked out of an AirBnB and needed “cash to call and Uber.” Be on the lookout! Doug the Scammer’s scam is catching on.”

From GoFundMe:

“On January 1, 2019, our friend was shot in the head as an innocent bystander in NW DC. He is critically injured and will need surgery, rehabilitation time, and lots of medical care.

The last thing he, his girlfriend, his family, or his dog need to worry about is money. So if you’re able, please chip in what you can and share with your networks so we can help out. Thank you.”

“Dear PoPville,

Did you see this story of an innocent bystander getting shot in the head near Jackie Lee’s?”

Thanks to all who passed on this important fundraiser:

“Today, December 26th, the day after Christmas, our friends at the Anacostia Playhouse came to work and discovered they had been robbed. Thieves broke in and stole several laptops and computers, a tablet, box office cash, blank checks and credit cards (which they quickly used to make unauthorized purchases). As if that wasn’t bad enough, the robbers used a crowbar and broke into locked cupboards and filing cabinets.

In addition to leaving destruction and heartbreak in their wake, the thieves caused thousands of dollars in damages and stolen property. The Anacostia Playhouse has a huge impact on Anacostia and DC’s arts’ scene but they are still a tiny Ward 8 nonprofit. This crime will have a substantial and devastating impact on their operations — just as the Playhouse is about to host rehearsals on their next production, American Moor (Jan 11 – Feb 3). The Anacostia Playhouse will need financial, logistical and community support in the coming days and weeks. (more…)

Ed. Note: Not to belittle the seriousness but the burglar crashing into the cat’s water bowl upon entry is pretty great.

From the Mayor’s Office:

“Mayor Muriel Bowser and the DC Department of Behavioral Health announced the release of LIVE. LONG. DC., the District’s strategic plan to reduce opioid use and misuse and to reduce opioid-related deaths by 50 percent by 2020.

“This plan outlines how District agencies will work with our public and community partners to tackle DC’s opioid epidemic,” said Mayor Bowser. “We know that the opioid epidemic in our city looks different than how the epidemic is talked about nationwide. This plan was created in response to the specific needs of our community and focuses our resources on increasing awareness and prevention, enhancing treatment offerings, and strengthening recovery supports.”

Created by a public-private working group of more than 40 stakeholders, LIVE. LONG. DC. outlines strategies to address the opioid epidemic through prevention, treatment, and recovery supports. Even as the plan was under development, ideas sparked from the working group were put into practice right away and so several of the strategic approaches are already well underway.

The plan’s seven goals include: (more…)
