MPD Investigating “Hate/Bias related Offense” with more “I want Jexit” Graffiti Found

Ed. Note: There had been a rash of anti semitic graffiti back in December with ‘I want Jexit’ sprayed all over town.

“The Fifth District is investigating a Defacing of Public Property offense that occurred on Friday, January 18, 2019 at approximately 02:44 am.

Hate speech words were found spray painted on sidewalks located in the 1000 and 900 blocks of Brentwood Road, NE.

Anyone who may have information pertaining to this investigation is asked to call 202-727-9099, or may send a text message to 50411.”

WUSA reported:

“According to Metropolitan Police, the hateful messages were found around 3 a.m. at two auto shops in the 1000 and 900 blocks of Brentwood Road. The words “I WANT JEXIT!”, were found scrawled in front of Shalom Tire and Auto repair by WUSA9 reporter Mikea Turner at one of the scenes.”

Update from MPD:

“MPD has been investigating several incidents of similar graffiti over the past month stating “I want Jexit.” We have been discussing it with national leaders on hate crimes, such as the Anti-Defamation League and Southern Poverty Law Center, as well as local leaders in the Jewish community. At this time, there is no consensus on what it means, or whether it is motivated by hate.

We recognize that regardless of the meaning of the graffiti or the intent of the offender, it is causing concern in the community and there is a perception that it may be anti-Semitic. MPD wants to reassure the community that we and the Bowser Administration are taking this very seriously. The Mayor’s Director of Religious Affairs, and Monica Palacio, the Director of Human Rights, are speaking with members of the community. We will continue to investigate this and ask that anyone with information about the graffiti contact us.”

“Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser’s Office of Unified Communications (OUC) is proud to announce the implementation of a police non-emergency option. Residents and visitors of the District can now call 3-1-1 to report all police non-emergencies. The OUC defines a non-emergency call as any call related to an incident that does not pose an immediate threat to the safety of individuals and/or incidents that occurred at least one hour before the initial request for police assistance is made.

Last year, the agency received approximately 1.5 million 9-1-1 calls for service, and approximately of 20 percent of those calls were for non-emergency incidents. To improve call taking efficiency, the agency has developed a pathway for non-emergency calls using the current 3-1-1 call tree, previously utilized exclusively for city services and information. From a press release, Mayor Bowser Announces a New Focus on Deploying More Car-Free Officers:

“In her Second Term Outlook Address, Mayor Bowser announced that as the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) continues to build up its police force to 4,000 active officers, MPD will dedicate additional officers to community policing assignments that are deployed by foot, bike, Segway, and scooters. Currently, MPD employs over 3,800 sworn officers.

“We know that reducing violence in our city requires an approach that includes police involvement, human services involvement, and community involvement. We also know how important it is to have a police force that is resourced, trained, and that reflects the values of Washington, DC,” said Mayor Bowser. (more…)

“update: BANK ROBBERY w/ROBBER SHOT/ SUSPICIOUS PACKAGE- BB&T Bank (NOT M&T), 1100 Wayne Ave. Suspect was carrying a backpack with wires. ALL suspects (1) in custody. Suspect en route to hospital. Bomb techs coming for backpack.”

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Special Investigations Branch seek the public’s assistance in identifying a person of interest in reference to a Kidnapping offense that occurred on Tuesday, January 15, 2019, in the 2800 block of Dumbarton Street, Northwest.

At approximately 4:55 pm, the suspect grabbed a juvenile victim and attempted to lure them away from the listed location. The suspect then fled the scene on foot. (more…)

UPDATE: Homicide. Daytime Shooting on North Capitol

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a homicide that occurred on Tuesday, January 15, 2019, in the 1200 Block of North Capitol Street, Northwest.

At approximately 2:59 pm, members of the First District responded to the listed location for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported the victim to an area hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries. After all life-saving efforts failed, the victim was pronounced dead. (more…)

“Actually just heard back from leasing office. It’s a mentally unstable woman who refuses to leave. Police said they aren’t using forced entry yet. Residents are allowed to enter and leave through the back door. No word about entry/exit for residents on 8th floor.”

Triple Shooting Saturday Afternoon, One Victim Killed

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Homicide Branch are investigating a shooting that occurred in the 1700 block of Benning Road, NE at approximately 2:00 pm this afternoon. Three individuals sustained multiple gunshot wounds during the incident, and were transported from the scene to area hospitals for treatment of their injuries. Unfortunately, one of the individuals later expired at the hospital. Anyone with information related to this case is encouraged to call MPD at 202-727-9099, or text the information to 5-0-4-1-1.”

“Earlier tonight [Friday], an adult male and an adult female were injured in a shooting that is believed to have taken place in the area around the 5000 block of 6th Place, NE. The both victims received non-life-threatening injuries.
