This morning a resident wrote on the MPD3D listserv:

“Prostitution on 12th Street NW between Massachusetts and N Street is getting completely out of control. Yesterday, I counted four prostitutes in the area while walking to work and today there were five. It is a real eye opener to see residents walking their dogs or taking their kids to school while maneuvering around hookers, pimps and vehicles pulling over to negotiate, while the whole area reeks of marijuana. When people complain, there is a noticeable police presence in the area, so they move one street over for a night or two. This problem obviously is not going to go away on its own or with what is currently being done by the police, in fact it has gotten much worse over the last few months. Please address this problem with more resources and/or a different strategy as it is decreasing the quality of life and endangering residents in this area.”

From the Human Rescue Alliance:

“Jaquan Jackson of Washington, DC, was arrested yesterday on a warrant obtained by Humane Rescue Alliance (HRA) Humane Law Enforcement Officers and charged with felony animal fighting. Mr. Jackson turned himself in to the Metropolitan Police Department upon learning of the warrant. Other charges will be presented to a Grand Jury. 12 dogs, and one American alligator were seized in the case.

“Organized dog fighting is barbaric,” said Lisa LaFontaine, President and CEO of HRA. “The pain and suffering these animals endured was excruciating and to think that it was all for entertainment is repulsive. I commend the diligence of our Field Services staff who pursued this case with vigor.”

On June 11, 2018, Officers responded to a call about a dog that was actively hanging itself from a chain. When the Officers arrived, they found the dog was deceased, hanging over the fence. The dog was also observed to have scarring around its muzzle and forelimbs, consistent with organized dog fighting. (more…)

These arrests focus on the tandem concerns of the criminality of prostitution and the issue of human trafficking.

Ed. Note: MPD tells me “This arrest was made possible due to the help from the community. We certainly appreciate it.” These suspects were also charged with the violent robbery and assault where a woman was pushed down a stairwell after being robbed resulting in a broken leg.

From MPD:

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Third District have announced two arrests have been made in reference to an Armed Carjacking offense that occurred on Thursday, January 17, 2019, in the 1400 block of Euclid Street, Northwest.

At approximately 1:12 pm, two suspects approached the victim, while she was at her vehicle, at the listed location. The first suspect assaulted the victim while the second suspect entered the victim’s vehicle. After the assault, the first suspect also entered the victim’s vehicle. The suspects were unsuccessful in taking the victim’s vehicle. Both suspects took the victim’s property from the vehicle then fled the scene on foot.

On Saturday, January 19, 2019, 16-year-old Kaveyon Andrews, of Northeast, DC, and pursuant to a DC Superior Court arrest warrant, 17-year-old Thadduse Hartridge, of Southeast, DC, were both arrested and charged as adults with Assault with Intent to Rob while Armed and Armed Carjacking.

As a result of the detectives’ investigation, Andrews and Hartridge were charged in two other robbery offenses that occurred in the Third District. (more…)

Ed. Note: An arrest has now been made.

“Dear PoPville,

Thank you for spreading the word about the vicious attack on our dog walker [Ed. Note: MPD has now released video of the assailants, you can see the very disturbing incident here. Please contact police with any info.] earlier this week. We are really grateful to you for sharing information so widely and hope it will help find the two assailants.

A number of your readers have asked about ways to support her and her family.  We plan to continue to pay her while she recovers and some of her medical costs will be reimbursed by the DC Crime Victims Compensation Fund, but there will be additional costs associated with her recovery (including lost wages from family members who will have to take time off to care for her).  We have started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money to offset those costs for her.  Anyone interested in donating can find more information here.

She’s one of the kindest and most loving people I’ve ever met.  While no one deserves to be attacked like this, it’s especially distressing that she was a victim of this horrific attack.

Sincerely,
Lesley, Caesar, and Ana (her clients)”
