“Dear PoPville,

I was sad to see my favorite DC fake holiday’s web site had disappeared. Unlike Douglas Jefferson himself, I was at least able to bring the website back to life. Remember, when you’re out for a drink this Saturday night you have a moral duty to buy a stranger a drink and maybe make a new friend.

How do I celebrate Douglas Jefferson Day?

Douglas Jefferson day is celebrated on the first Saturday of October every year. According to tradition, there are only three rules one must follow.

Three rules:

Douglas Jefferson Day must be celebrated in a Public House of the District of Columbia, in the company of good friends
A gift must be given to a friend. One must not have exchanged money for the gift, and it must be “no larger than a baker’s loaf.‡”
In the spirit of Douglas Jefferson Day, you must buy a drink for a stranger.

From a press release:

“Just two moths after the debut of their first beers, Bardo [1200 Bladensburg Rd, NE] is introducing another wave of brews, bringing the total number of beers on tap to thirteen. Black sour, imperial brown ale, imperial IPA and a dark IPA, as well as dry hopped versions of the imperial IPA and the black IPA will be tapped Thursday, Sept 25th.

Bardo is extremely excited about the debut of the GABF bronze medal winning, imperial IPA, Dremo Tibetan Sasquatch. “Dremo started as one of our cult favorites. It gradually became less of a secret and evolved into our flagship beer.” commented Bardo Brewpub’s Andrew Stewart. “It has been the number one question we have fielded since pulling the brewery out of storage, ‘When is Dremo going to be ready?’.”

Bardo’s Facebook page says:

“We have expanded our cold storage and added more serving tanks. The new brews have been transferred from the fermenters and we now have THIRTEEN beers on tap – including 3 dry hopped and one oak aged. The debut coincides with our Thursday special of all you can drink for $20. Just ask the bartender for the unlimited special.”

From an email:

Dacha Beer Garden will be kicking off Oktoberfest 2014 this coming Saturday, September 20th. Doors will open early at 11am with “Angezapft ist” — “It’s tapped!” — the cry that goes up every year when the Lord Mayor of Munich hammers a spigot into the very first keg of Oktoberfest beer.

It’s going to be a gorgeous day. We encourage folks to get there before 2pm when the crowds generally come rolling in.

Starting Saturday through the end of Oktoberfest, Dacha will be serving Weihenstephaner Oktoberfestbier and staff will be wearing full lederhosen and dirndls. We’ll be raffling off prizes, hosting some amusing contests, and serving up special beer cocktails.

Oktoberfest beer will be included on our happy hour menu (Mon-Thurs 4pm till 7pm, $5 singles and $10 for boots) until the end of October.

As always – we’ll have traditional brats, ‘kraut and pretzels – for those looking for an authentic German experience. However, we’ve also introduced new kabobs on the menu that are pretty damn delicious. Marinated beef, lamb and pork skewers served with grilled pita and a cucumber salad.”
