From an email:

Welcome our new addition to the Sticky Rice Brunch DC line-up:

Chicken and waffles, sushi style!

Tempura battered and all-natural chicken breast, rolled in soy paper with jalapeño infused blue agave nectar, accompanied by fresh waffle pieces and bacon bits.

Drink too much the night before and “never want to drink again”?

Sticky Rice DC is now offering Pedialyte in assorted flavors to help you battle that hangover.

Other popular Sticky brunch favorites include shrimp and gouda grits, blueberry waffles, curry or coconut fried rice, and french toast with mixed berries and honey-cream.

With our popular brunch drinks, Asian pear sangria, bloody Sunday bloody Marys, and Sakimosas!

Two questions – anyone try the brunch at Sticky Rice (1224 H St NE)? And more importantly – does Pedialyte help cure hangovers?

It’s been quite the saga for Menomale to get their liquor license in Brookland. Good news came via the Brookland listserv yesterday afternoon from the folks behind Menomale:

“Thank you so much for your support this experience has been invaluable. We literally just signed a voluntary agreement w Mr Bennett on behalf of the ANC. We have agreed to not serve alcohol from 2-5 schooldays as a show of good faith towards the community. With this we have also received the ANC’S approval for our sidewalk cafe in the process gathering friends and not enemies. We absolutely love this communities support and will make an announcement following our hearing tomorrow.”

The Hamilton just before opening in Dec. 2011

Another thing I missed yesterday afternoon was the scoop from Guest of Guest about The Hamilton no longer staying open 24 hours:

“The Hamilton’s new hours:

Monday – Thursday 7:30am until 1am
Friday 7:30am until 2am
Saturday 8:30am until 2am

The bar section will remain open until 2am on weekdays and 3am on weekends.”

The Hamilton is located in the old Borders bookstore at 14th and F St, NW.

Seems like a good time for a proper judging – has anyone checked them out yet? If so how’s the restaurant? How’s the music space?

725 Florida Ave NW

A couple of weeks ago we noted the new paint job at the former Tropicana Jamaican Eatery which closed in late Jan. 2012 at 725 Florida Ave, NW. I’ve been getting tons of inquiries from folks wondering who might be moving into the space. It’s been tough to find out anything. I once asked workers on the scene and they said it would be a restaurant. I asked if they knew what type of restaurant and they told me it would serve food. Ok. Not a lot to work on with that but earlier in the week I heard some promising scuttlebutt. I’m not sure of the accuracy but since so many folks have been curious – what the hell.

I hear that the folks behind the former Cafe Nema (remember how awesome that sign was?) will be taking over the space. Cafe Nema was located at 1334 U St. NW which is now home to the ****ing Codmother.

Stay tuned for more info on the former Tropicana as it becomes available.

3412 11th St, NW

Back in Feb. I shared the news that the PORC food truck was opening a brick and mortar restaurant in Columbia Heights in the old Aquario space at 3412 11th St, NW (next to Meridian Pint.) Yesterday they released the name via email:

Kangaroo Boxing Club to Open in Columbia Heights

Brought to you by the founders of popular food truck, Purveyors of Rolling Cuisine (PORC), Josh Saltzman and Trent Allen; along with fellow U of Michigan alum Chris Powers and DC-native Peyton Sherwood.

Set to open this spring (or early summer, depending), the new neighborhood bar and restaurant, Kangaroo Boxing Club, will offer brick-and-mortar versions of popular PORC offerings and other unique KBC selections.

Kangaroo Boxing will be the establishment everyone wishes for their own neighborhood. A nice relaxed atmosphere, quality and consistent menu options and a solid selection of beer and wine. KBC will be located at 3412 11th St. NW in Columbia Heights, next door to Meridian Pint.

The name, Kangaroo Boxing Club, comes from long-running, drink-infused, late-night bar discussions on the fact that, without technology, man is physically unable to compete with the majority of the animal kingdom. How would you win a match with a kangaroo?

On March 23rd, we spoke about the possibility that bars may soon be able to stay open later. Council Member Jim Graham writes:

Dear Friends, I want to have maximum public comment on the recent budget proposal to extend the hours of service of alcohol in the bars from 2 AM to 3 AM, weekdays, and from 3 AM to 4 AM on weekends. This proposal will have significant impact on businesses and on the residents of our neighborhoods.

For that reason, I have set up a hearing just on this issue, scheduled to begin in the early evening so as to enable persons to voice their opinions on this.

I welcome public testimony at this hearing. I have requested, and expect to receive, a detailed impact statement from ABRA as part of the hearing.

Please contact Malcolm Cameron at (202) 724-8191 if you wish to sign up to testify. It is also very helpful if you bring 15 copies of your written testimony to the hearing. The Hearing will be held on Tuesday, April 17 at 5:00 p.m. in room 500 of the John A. Wilson Building, 1350 Pennsylvania Ave. NW as part of the FY 13 Budget Oversight process.

113 Rhode Island Ave, NW

On Monday we spoke about the Showtime Lounge coming to 113 Rhode Island Ave, NW in Bloomingdale. At the time one commenter, Colonel K, wrote:

“So one of the best (black) barbershops in the area was closed to make way for a pub for white hipster yuppies. Cheers.”

After I stopped by one of the owners followed up in an email wishing to clarify the situation:

“I noticed in the comments sections that some people were concerned about the predominately African-American frequented barbershop being muscled out to make way for a “gentrified” bar. I’d like to make sure people know that we had nothing to do with the closing of the salon. I was only able to get the space because I’ve lived upstairs from the Showtime for the last five years and got to know the barbers well, so I was able to jump on the opportunity once it was clear that they were closing. They had to close because the owner, who didn’t work there and only rented out the barber chairs, hadn’t paid her rent in months and was getting sued for back rent. So basically, the place was closing no matter what. If anyone would like to visit Ben or Sean or any of the barbers that are no longer there, we’ve posted where they’re working now on the outside of the building.”
