From a press release:

“It’s a Brewery! Celebrating the “rebirth” of San Francisco-based Shmaltz Brewing Co., DC’s Jack Rose Dining Saloon is christening the brewery’s new NYC home with a rooftop tap takeover party hosted by Shmaltz brewmaster himself, Jeremy Cowan, on Saturday, July 20 at 2PM. The alfresco celebration will feature 24 Shmaltz brews on draft, from the cask and in rare vintage bottles – including the limited-release Death of a Contract Brewer IPA – as well as celebratory cigars, creative deli fare and an afternoon of beer and shower-themed games like baby bottle bowling and beer bingo.

“Born” in San Francisco in 1996, Shmaltz is being “rebirthed” now in 2013 with its new 20,000-square-foot, 50-barrel brewing home in Clifton Park, NY. With the help of Jack Rose beer director Nahem Simon, Shmaltz is taking over the rooftop’s tap handles with brews from its loved He’Brew and Coney Island Lagers lines as well as launching the uber-rare, exclusive Death of a Contract Brewer Commemorative Black IPA, making Jack Rose the only place outside of NYC to taste this celebratory limited-release brew.

Since 18 is a sacred number in the Jewish tradition, Jack Rose will be featuring 18 award-winning Shmaltz beers on draft and cask, including the first keg of Death of a Contract Brewer Commemorative Black IPA to make it outside of NYC (more…)

Last week we learned more about Thomas Foolery opening in the former Zeke’s DC Donutz space in Dupont. We knew the place was gonna be “goofball” and it is refreshingly so. I stopped by yesterday for some photos and also learned that this will be the home to the “brick and mortar” spot in Dupont that the Big Cheese Food Truck mentioned they were opening. You can see the full food options here and you can see the beer and drink list here.

Thomas Foolery is opening this Wednesday, 11 am at 2029 P Street, NW. They’ll be open 11am – 12am weekdays and 11am – 2am on the weekends.

Have a look inside after the jump. (more…)

Back in October 2012 we learned Bardo brewpub would be reopening at 1200 Bladensburg Road, NE in Trinidad. In November 2012 we learned some more details:

Plans for the bar include self serve taps, 500 outdoor seats, a funky building made from shipping containers, and the biggest brewery in the DC area. Bardo Rodeo operated in the 90′s as the largest brewpub in the country. The 22000 sq. ft. facility included 900 indoor & 700 outdoor seats and a 25-barrel brewhouse. As one of the first bars in the Clarendon neighborhood in Arlington VA, Bardo brewed 4000 kegs a year and enjoyed thousands of visitors each weekend.

From the folks at Bardo:

“come by and drink some beer, play some cornhole, watch a movie, and enjoy the summer nights!”

They open Monday at 5pm! Regular hours will be 5pm to 1am.

From an email:

“Duffy’s Irish Pub has received approval from ABRA this afternoon for our outside patio [open until 11pm]. As many know we have sought a patio for a very long time. We would like to thank all the many, many neighbors who wrote ABRA in support of Duffy’s. It will take a us a short time to get up and ready. We hope to have the patio open by August 1st.”

And in other Duffy’s news – tonight is the $1 Beers Furlough Happy Hour from 4-7pm.

A few weeks ago we noted that Flash Snack Bar had posted their menu at 645 FLorida Ave, NW. You can see the full menu here. I stopped by the other day and was blown away at how big this place is. Well, the snack bar downstairs is actually pretty small but it has a great chill vibe. Upstairs is home to the much larger music/dance spot. In a speakeasy sorta way you get upstairs by going through an old photo booth in the back of the first floor. The staircase is filled with graffiti making the entrance into the second floor space even more impressive. You can see their calendar of upcoming shows here.

I actually hadn’t realized the upstairs was already open. In my defense, I am old. But I can still appreciate how awesome this could be:

Their facebook page says:

Dance music has a new headquarters in the District. Located in the newly booming Shaw neighborhood, Flash will bring world class nightlife to our nation’s capital. For those who prefer their house music served hot, Flash is the first and only club in North America to feature Full Fat Audio amplifiers, paired with a digitally processed, fully active, 4-way stereo Funktion-One sound system with over 30,000 peak watts to ensure that all bodies will remain in motion at all times.

And when I stopped by to ask about the 24 hour application I learned that those late hours will likely just be for the weekend. And I also learned the summer garden out front should be open in the next week. And even cooler, next year they hope to open a roof deck. Oh yeah the first floor will also be expanding soon which will open it up a bit. Bottom line, this place is very nondescript when walking down Florida Ave. but there is a lot more than meets the eye. There’s actually lots for everyone here – dancing/music upstairs, chill bar downstairs, and I’m told a pretty mean beef tounge flatbread too.

‏@ZoeTillman tweeted the news yesterday:

“Cue the sad slow jam: Ibiza Nightclub filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on July 3 http://bit.ly/10IVbfQ

And in more bad news ANC Rep @TonyTGoodman tweets:

“Yet another Ibiza incident: ABRA show-cause hearing tomorrow for assault, sale to minor, interfering w/ investigation & more.”

Back in late May we learned the club, including “nude dancing license” was for sale for $4.5 Million.

Back in Aug. 2012 we noted the new Toledo Lounge had closed for renovations. The original Toledo Lounge was sold back in Feb. 2011 to the owners of the Black Squirrel and Ventnor Cafe.  Libertine has finally arrived featuring “one of the country’s largest absinthe selections”.

Update. Thanks to Libertine for a sending a photo of the inside and the menus:

From a press release:

“Libertine, a cocktail house and bistro, located at 2435 18th Street NW in Adams Morgan, will hold its grand opening on Tuesday (July 9), starting at 5 p.m.

Libertine features one of the country’s largest absinthe selection with 30 different labels, many that were specially ordered from Europe, 10 specialty cocktails and four cocktail draft lines, a potpourri of small-batch spirits and locally produced wines, and craft beer draft lines. Flights of draft cocktail are available.

The name Libertine is a nod to the absinthe and spirits program as well as free-thinkers and those who live an unrestrained life. (more…)

Back in late May we learned Zeke’s DC Donutz had closed in Dupont. On June 14th a Liquor License application was posted out front for a:

Small, low key restaurant with casual American Food. Large bottled soda selection and large selection of beer, wine and spirits. Total Load: 50, Seats Inside: 40.”

It is coming from the owner of Mr. Yogato. He tells me it will be a fun “goofball” spot and should be open around July 15th. Thanks to all who sent emails about the Thomas Foolery coming soon sign that was recently posted. One of the things the owners are doing are asking some “DC celebrities” for their favorite beers to be included on the list. They graciously asked me too. So free PoPville t-shirt to the first person who correctly guesses which beer I selected for my choice.

Their facebook page says:

“Mario Kart, 80’s toys, grilled cheese, ice cream sandwiches, and a whimsical bar scene…

On schedule to open the week of the 14th…”

Looking forward to seeing how the space turns out.
