This is very very very good news. Joe Englert (the man behind much of U Street and H Street’s early revitalization) is returning to Petworth. He first dipped his toe in the Petworth waters back in 2006 with Temperance Hall (which later sold and became Looking Glass Lounge.) Ed. Note: Further proof that everyone called this stretch, down to Otis, and why it will always be Petworth to me and many others. But anyway back to the real news – Englert’s coming back.

I’d been hearing rumors and a reader saw some action at the former hardware store which closed back in March 2014 just south of the Petworth Metro. The reader also sent a report from the Park View blog: “a new tavern is in the works called Reliable Tavern & Hardware”. I emailed with ABRA and they have confirmed that an application for Reliable Tavern and Hardware has been filed. And the signatory to that application? One Joseph Englert. Oh yeah!! As a huge fan of Temperance Hall (and thank God, Looking Glass Lounge still kicks ass) this is very very very good news for Georgia Ave’s continued revitalization. Stay tuned.

A few weeks ago we learned all about the plans for ANXO Cidery & Pintxos Bar. It sounds awesome. It will, however, require a tremendous renovation for this sweet property – vacant since 2000. The owners were kind enough to let me stop by and snap some photos so we can take a look back when the transformation is complete.  Work will likely begin in June and hopefully be completed by late October/early November.  The first floor dominated by a bar (25 seats) and the second floor for the restaurant (49 seats).  Oh yeah and a 2500 liter cask for fermenting cider is coming too.  There will be 42 draft lines! 17 for beer, 17 for cider 6 for wine and 2 for cocktails.  Can’t wait to see how this turns out:

A reader tweets us:

“I don’t know much about these, but I imagine this isn’t good for @justinscafe1025 what say you @PoPville ?”

Normally these closures are ordered for underage sales or violence of some kind. Anyone know what happened? Looks like a letter up top in the photo – anyone happen to see what it said. Ed. Note: Of course I asked OP but haven’t heard back yet.

From the Washington Blade:

“In a development likely to surprise his former Council colleagues, Graham said he’s working as special events director for The House at 3530 Georgia Ave., N.W., which has operated at that location since 1979.

Graham said he will promote the Sunday night gay male stripper venue as well as a weekly Thursday night event at the club featuring male strippers catering to a straight female clientele.

The club’s new gay stripper venue, called Rock Hard Sunday, is scheduled to have its grand opening Sunday night, April 19.”

After a slight delay The Alibi has opened in the My Brothers’ Place space not far from Union Station. Their website says:

“NOW OPEN FOR LUNCH

Come try the new food on the block. Fish and Chips, Meat Pies, Crab Cakes, Banoffee Pie and More.

You can see their full menu here.

As a nod to the history of Capital Hill, “The Alibi” is inspired by British traditions and influenced by local American products. The menu features slow roasts, fresh meat pies, fried fish, and other comfort foods made in house with age old techniques including braising, smoking, baking and pickling.

With restored exposed brick, wood floors and stained glass chandeliers, “The Alibi” provides an escape from the hectic, fast paced world right outside its doors. Simple honest products as well as personable and stellar service give everyone from Senators to maintenance workers a reason to find a good alibi.”

A reader says the liquor license is still pending but should go through in May.
