From an email:

“In light of last week’s news about Justice Kennedy’s retirement from the Supreme Court, it is more urgent than ever that we all work together to support Democratic candidates in the upcoming Midterm Elections. To meet this goal, we are inviting you to our first Midterm Postcard Writing Party, organized by a small, concerned group of neighborhood friends, and graciously hosted by the Midlands Beer Garden, on Tuesday, July 3rd at 6pm. We know folks are looking for ways to get involved, and this is a great, low-commitment way of doing so. Did I mention there is BOGO free beer until 7pm? (more…)

Back in July 2017 we posted some scuttlebutt “Cheers Bro!” Owner of the Reef (RIP) Opening Basement Bar in Logan Circle? In September we confirmed and learned the bar would be called The Crown and Crow. OH MY GOD. It turned out sick. Sick, sick, sick. Ed. Note: Sick meaning drop dead gorgeous. SICK! With a bar like this it comes down to photos, the photos tell it all. But what I can say is that – you’d never guess this lives downstairs from the recently opened Pappe restaurant. It’s kinda like the exact opposite of and subterranean spot up the block – Player’s Club. They are both spectacular spaces but for exact opposite reasons. The photos really don’t do it justice but will explain a bit.

Actually what the photos don’t totally explain is that there are two spaces. The first is the one you walk into with the sweet mural of the crow and crown. There is a beautiful old bar that was saved from Philly or Pittsburgh one of those loathsome Pennsylvania cities with the repulsive sports teams. Anyway, truly a beautiful bar that was in terrible condition but restored to this beautiful state:

A million more jaw dropping photos after the jump. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

My single friends and I have been on the hunt for a bar where there’s the possibility of meeting someone for a while now, and have been failing miserably. I blame the apps (which I’m on) but I miss the bar scene pre-apps! From being on dating apps, I know there are supposedly plenty of single people in this city in my age range (early 30’s) hoping to meet someone, but do they not go out except for when they set up dates?! From our experience, the bars are essentially filled with couples/people on dates or groups of friends who are not looking to talk to anyone except who they came with. Are we just not going to the right places? Do any bars have a singles night? (If not, and any of them are reading this… can they start?) Any recs would be greatly appreciated!”

From a press release:

“Todd Thrasher, the likable wine and spirits devotee, has been at the forefront of the bar scene in the past year for his newest venue, the acclaimed Brothers and Sisters in Washington, DC. Thrasher earned a name for himself during his long and fruitful tenure at Restaurant Eve and Society Fair, and at his highly praised spirits program and the first progressive speakeasy in the Mid-Atlantic, Bar PX. Now, Thrasher is branching out on his own with Potomac Distilling Company, an urban rum distillery and watering hole, anchoring the west end of The Wharf, the newest development along DC’s waterfront. Thanks to Cameron for sending:

“Our bartender at Pitchers just told us they’re opening up a lesbian bar in the basement called A League of Her Own and I’m shook. Coming this summer.

It’d be the only lesbian bar in the city.”

On June 19th Pitchers DC posted:

“We are so happy to announce that Jo McDaniel will be joining the Pitchers Team. She will eventually run “A league of her own”. Here is a little about Jo.

Jo McDaniel has been creating a safe space in the LGBTQ bar scene in the DC area for 13 plus years. Since 2005, she has been that queer chick behind the stick at some of DC’s most relevant gay bars.

Earlier this month she won Stoli’s Key West Cocktail Classic after being the first woman to win the regionals in DC. She’s bringing $10,000 back home to Casa Ruby as well as winning $5,000 for AH Monroe, a Key West charity dedicated to providing resources for HIV and AIDS.

Jo is excited to be joining our bartending team and will be managing A League of Her Own, our queer women’s space, slated to open at the end of July.”
