“Dear PoPville,

I confirmed with the owner that after being a Dupont staple for decades the Royal Palace’s last night will be this Saturday. The building is being sold along with the license but the current owner was unsure of the new owners plans.

I think the awning summed it up best “Bar, Food & Fun.

Spoke to him again last night it’s been 37 years!”

From Atlas:

“Join the team at Atlas Brew Works tomorrow, March 8 for Ponzi Day as they raise a glass to their favorite scam artist, Charles Ponzi!

For his birthday they’ve sent out seven kegs of Ponzi IPA filled today to their friends at Roofers Union, The Blaguard, City Tap Dupont, Pizzeria Paradiso Georgetown, Pizzeria Paradiso Dupont Circle, City Tap Penn Quarter, and Penn Social. The bold and fruity IPA named after Charles Ponzi is made with five varietals of hops including Mandarina Bavaria and Centennial, followed by hints of Munich malt. The Atlas team will be visiting each location to lift a pint and hand out free swag! For more information visit facebook.com/AtlasBrewWorks.”

Thanks to Bob for sending from NBC Sports:

“While The Greene Turtle will close April 9, the Shell Raiser Lounge will re-open in its place for all Wizards and Capitals postseason games.”

The Washington Business Journal asks: “Monumental buys out Greene Turtle’s lease. Could sports betting be far behind?”

1639 R Street, NW

There had been a lot of chatter on social media but now Cobalt confirms their closure on 17th Street:

“It’s no secret that the building that housed Cobalt (1639 R St NW) and the adjacent property recently sold.

With the combination of the sale of the buildings, the start of demolition, costly infrastructure repairs and upgrades that we would need to shoulder to remain open for the short remainder of our lease (without an opportunity to extend the lease) along with a slow decline in sales we decided it was the right time to close the business to focus on our other businesses and some personal family needs. From an email:

“The Pub & The People (Corner of N Capitol St & R St NW) has started doing free, live, local music!

We’ve been working with the badass Ben Tufts (a DC musician that has been involved for decades in the local music scene) and 7DrumCity to put together really great one/two person acts here at The Pub. We even learned how to do sound engineering, so we can make it sound really really nice.

Here is the schedule for the this month – we will be doing it every Sunday and Tuesday from 6-8pm: (more…)
