“Formerly Smoked & Stacked, Tallboy offers the Shaw neighborhood affordable grilled cheese, wings and beer”

1239 9th Street, NW

From a press release:

“Tin Shop – a creative bar and restaurant development group founded by Geoff Dawson and Peter Bayne – announces the opening of TallBoy on March 7, 2019. Located at 1239 9th Street Northwest, the Shaw neighborhood establishment specializes in grilled cheese sandwiches, wings, and tallboy [16 oz.] beers.

TallBoy menu items are designed to satisfy hungry daytime and late-night patrons with comforting, approachable fare and drinks at an affordable price point. The legacy of the now shuttered but beloved pastrami shop, Smoked and Stacked, will live on through the Smoked & Stacked grilled cheese, with swiss cheese, pastrami, sauerkraut, and Russian dressing.

Other grilled cheese options include the Cuban: Swiss, bread and butter pickles, ham, Dijon mustard, and Kim Cheese: pepper jack, kimchi, bacon. Smoked tomato soup will be available for dipping. Wing flavors include classic Buffalo wings as well as the Memphis Dry Rub, Old Bay Dry Rub, Lemon Pepper: wet wing with a butter, lemon pepper sauce, and General Tso: wet wing with homemade sauce. “I think delicious comfort food served all day and night, and reasonably priced drinks will be a welcomed addition in Shaw,” said Tin Shop co-founder Peter Bayne. “Grilled Cheese, wings and beer, what’s not to like?” continued Tin Shop co-founder Geoff Dawson.

Beverage options include a full bar, one seasonal cocktail on tap, and a robust beer selection with nine tallboy offerings by Schlitz, Guinness, PBR, Bold Rock Cider, Burly Oak Lost IPA, Union Duckpin, Flying Dog Numero Uno, and Terrapin Hopsecutioner. Wine is offered by the glass, with a selection of French red and white wines curated by former Ripple General Manager Danny Fisher. A selection of liquors will also be available.

A special menu item, the Tom & Cheese grilled cheese sandwich, serves as a tribute to Tom Marmet, a close friend of Tin Shop co-founder Geoff Dawson. Marmet tragically passed in 2018 as the victim of a stray bullet and a portion of the proceeds of the grilled cheese named after him will be donated to So Others Might Eat (SOME), where Marmet served as a volunteer at the time of his passing.

As a complement to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center and its surrounding Shaw neighborhood, TallBoy is a part of the Events DC retail program, inclusive of a mixture of retail and restaurants from over the past two years. “On behalf of Events DC, we are thrilled to be able to continue to enhance and enrich experiences inside and outside the Convention Center, for the betterment of the surrounding neighborhood and for our residents and visitors alike. Congratulations to Tin Shop as they welcome TallBoy, in the previous Smoked & Stacked retail space, as a new fast-casual concept,” said Gregory A. O’Dell, president and chief executive officer of Events DC. “We remain proud to watch our exterior retail tenants evolve, expand and help propel the Shaw community.”

TallBoy boasts a 1,200 square foot interior with 30 seats, and features a mural painted by Kelly Towles, a local mural artist known for his colorful and fun pop-art style work featured in various locations throughout the city. Operating hours will be Monday – Thursday 3 p.m. – 2 a.m.; Friday 3 p.m. – 3 a.m.; Saturday 12 p.m. – 3 a.m.; and Sunday from 12 p.m. – 2 a.m.
